I went down to my local alfa spares garage today to get some bits for my 12v v6 engine i was told that the spares system works by chassis numbers,as i don't know the number that the engine came from the parts man had to look on the computer for a 1989 car.It turns out that there's two different coolant thermostats three different oil filters and he couldn't even find the oil pressure sender. Can anybody recommend anywhere, thanks.

For SVA emissions testing, it is recommended to get a letter from the manufacturer confirming the date of manufacture of the engine, based on the engine number. Could the dealer's computer also tell you the original chassis number from the engine number?
It might be worth posting on the 164 website and asking if anyone has a chassis/engine number near yours. 164 website (http://www.digest.net/alfa/FAQ/164/bin/dcforum/dcboard.cgi)
