HI THERE ALL,
Does anybody out there have a VHS video of Lancia Stratos racing or other, eg club meets, shows that I could buy?
I don't mind if its a good home made job or proper bought one.
Thanks Rob.

Hi Rob,
Welcome to the Forum, and I,ll be posting your Newsletter tonight in London....
Regarding Videos, Dave Watson, the site webmaster, makes a great video of the Stratos Motorsport Weekend, so if you ask him he might send you one for beer tokens.
Cheers, Nico/

How about us over here on the other side of the pond, eh???
Sorry I don't do PAL. And the DVD's I got of the Isle of Man TT from Duke UK are region locked so I can only watch 'em on my 'puter. :(
The vid's that Jeff Davison included on the info CD he sent me were just a tease. Nice touch, (thanks again Jeff) but I need MORE!
I do have the video "The Worlds Greatest Rally Cars" but again there just isn't enough Stratos content.

Stephanos,
David Watson had intended to do a run of videos for the North American market, but I believe there was some problem with regional electronics configurations. Similar to the problem with your DVD - VHS cassettes in region 1 (USA and Canada) use something called NTSC format, whereas casettes in the UK use.... something else....
I don't know if we ever found anyone who could provide the service gratis, but there are a few studios locally that could get the work done. If all else fails, I could get a copy of the Motorsport tapes from David, and get them translated and copied.
However, I think my girlfriend may have access to video editing equipment in her new job. I'll need to check.
David, I did e-mail you a couple of times with regard to whether you had found anyone to duplicate and distibute those videos for North America. Any luck on that front? Please drop me a line and I'll see if I can take care of this.
regards,

Hi Scott,
That's an great offer to get these videos converted into diffrent formats and available to others.
Regarding copyright, ultimately Dave holds this for the videos, but with his permission, I think we should be able to do something.
Another alternative to consider is if we created a CD or DVD with these videos (and other Stratos related clips) on them which could be avaialble to club members on a loan or sale basis. (Videos are obviously more bulky and difficult to transport.)
So, if Dave is willing to allow reproduction under his copyright, and others have Stratos footage available, is this something that club members might find useful / enjoyable?
What would be a fair loan charge? (Would cover postage and some portion of origination cost really....)
What would be a fair price to sell these discs at?
I'd like to see how this threead goes, and if we get enough positive responses and ideas, then I'll discuss it with the committee and see if we can do something quickly....
Regards, Nico/
PS - Scott, just a heads up....I know Dave is very busy with renovating his house and starting a new business right now, so I know he's not been a regular visitor to the site recently. Please be patient with him for your reply as I know he'd love nothing better than to be on the forum several times a day, but I think his priorities are elsewhere right now...

David Watson was going to send me some video footage some time ago as I have access to a system to convert PAL to NTSC. I still have not received the video but when and if I do, I can convert it to NTSC and send it to the US club members.

If we are talkin' "Home Movies" then ultimately digital would be the best format. Either VCD (Video Compact Disc) or region free DVD. Copying VHS tapes can be very time consuming, even with multiple machines. Also, one must consider the quality of the end product. Each time you make a copy from a copy you get one generation further from the master and the quality degrades exponetionaly. Not to mention that each time a VHS is played it itself degrades.
Whereas with digital, each copy is an exact replica of the master. It doesn't degrade when played. The only unknown factor would be the shelf life of the media used. (Most burnable DVD's claim 100 years. But a recent test revealed some to loss as much as 50% of their content in as little as six months.)
I would be willing to attempt the conversion from tape to disc if someone can supply me with some good original content on NTSC vhs or mini DV tape.
BUT... what we would really like to have is some of the excellent professional film shot back in the day. Now someone, somewhere must have this stuff. It just means talkin' to the right people. Anyone have any contacts with Castrol? They have produced some very fine racing / rally films in the past. They must have done something showcasing the Stratos at some point, ya think?

I just ordered the PAL version and had it changed to NTSC at the local video production shop. It cost about $10 but was well worth it. The only real down-side was that the video lost a little image quality in the process. Not much, but a little.
