Hi
Anyone got a genuine or home made tool for pushing the buckets down to be able to get the shims out on a twincam?

I've seen a picture of a genuine Lancia tool in the Guy Croft book, looks simple enough, but probably no longer available.

I could make one up, but to save time I'd rather get hold of one already made, or the real thing.

Any still knocking around at the bottom of a tool box?

Cheers

Surprise surprise yes! BUT seeing as I have a Spider with the same engine then I'm happy to loan it but not donate it! Drop me a private email and we'll arrange it's loan! Do you have a shedload of shims? Unfortunately I gave mine away years ago......

Hi Rob, this is the tool I have to lend you! Never been used either so I can't comment on the caveat included in the Ebay item attached! If you want to but one then this is probably a good price but ask about shipping first!

If any one needs twin cam valve shims, I have a large pile which I no longer have a need for.

Drop me a line if interested.

Hi Roger, always interested in spares! At some point in the future I will be putting a new cylinder head on the Spider so I can fit twin 40s on a sidedraught manifold ............. but that will mean a new finding a new one from a Euro spec 131/Argenta with a cambox mounted distributor.... So the shims may come in handy sometime, please don't bin them!

The ebay king strikes again!

Jeff you must have a massive garage to hold all your 'stash'!!!
hope you got the stickers ok.

Guy
looks just the job, I promise not to modify it to get at the last shim!!

Roger
When I get to measuring up I'll post up what I need. You never know there may be some that'll fit AND I'll have the ones I have to change too.

In the past I've seen a few sets of Fiat Shims on Ebay and thought about bidding on them. I know that there are a few members out there with the Twin Cam still fitted and perhaps it would be a good idea to buy the next one I see? That way we could build up a supply of them for anyone rebuilding an engine. I will raise this at the next committee meeting if you like?
Alternatively, if someone is willing to hold and coordinate the supply of spare shims please step forward and be prepared to receive any spare shims!
And Rob, don't worry about modifying the tool to do what is necessary - I'll only do it once I find out what needs altering to do the job. It's a bit bloody pointless making one tool to do 90% and needing another similar for the lasst 10%!

Jeff
Thanks for the offer.
I think I should be ok with borrowing Guys thanks. I've not measured things as yet, as I didn't build the engine. I just breathed some life into it. Its had head work and the valveseats re-cut so I'm suspecting that they are a bit tight. It runs silently from the cams- no ticking at all, which is suspicious. But it also ocasionally blowing back through the pop off valve when you rev it. When I get round to the engine again to finish everything off I'll compression test it first thing, as I think a valve may be staying slightly open. The cam timing could also be out, I don't know yet. It actually runs up quite well though, which makes me just suspect the shim clearances.

Hi Roger
Thanks, I'll definitly have them off you and start a collection for the club.

Not sure if I'll be to get to the race meetings but I'm sure we can sort something out. - I'll be going to the Donnington kit car show next week and also may be to divert into your neck of the woods on Friday the 12th around lunchtime.

I'll email you off line.
Thanks again

I finally got to look at this this weekend. Unfortunately the long handled tool (as per pic) may not be suitable for the Lancia engines?

I started on the inlet side and it definitly will NOT go down the back of the Cam on the Lancia cambox's without quite a bit of modifying, due to the indents in the cambox for the mounting bolts. A picture of a small tool in the Guy croft book has much narrower 'waisted' sides to probably overcome this.

I think I would also have to take the water rail off to get a swing at the exahust side with the longer handle if it would go in.

Guy thanks very much for the loan, I didn't want to modify yours by so much in case I made a cock up of it. I’ll sort out getting it back to you ' off line'

I think I will try and get hold of one of the shorter tools for myself now.

If nyone comes across one please let me know!

Jeff
There are a couple of companies in the states mention them, (international Autoparts and C. Orbert & Co) do you know if they are still available? I'm going to try and get in touch with them this week.

Don't worry about modding it! It's not something I'm desperately worried about! Just make it do the job you need it for and if it won't than I'll borrow your short one when I need it!

Finally got them
Thanks to Steve at Walkers Garage, we tracked down an 8V Integrale tool(s)
Part Nos 1867055000 twin pronged tool, along with 1860443000 lever.
Cost about £40 but that was trade (they unfortunately forgot to charge me the retail price!)

I had envisaged using the twin pronged tool to actually push the bucket down but this is purely to hold it down to remove the shim I think. Don't know if I dare use the lever to wedge between the cam and shim, so I may chicken out and wind the engine manually and be very careful holding the valve open with the tool on the right stroke so as to not hit the other valve.

Oh how I wish I had built the engine and done this before the head was on !

Guy, or any other SEC member still using a Twin Cam is welcome to borrow when I have done. I will also have a list and box of second hand shims fo use too.

cheers
Rob
