other than the fact I fancy decorating my garage wall!
Anybody know how to print poster-size pictures on an A4 printer. Is it the printer software that can split an image across several sheets, or is it the photoediting software? I can't find reference to it on my help menus.

My printer driver software does this (HP psc950 all-in-one device) and I believe various others do, but that route will depend entirely on your own printer supplier.
If you have a 'postscript' type printer, that is may support the option as well, but more often you get the feature of '2-up, 4-up' pages printed on a single sheet - you want the opposite to that.
There are some freebie/shareware software products for print handling, which are likely to do what you want. I've a feeling that 'fineprint' might do this for you, and it is often included on the cover discs of the PC magazines. But check for the feature you want beforehand, I may be completely wrong about this!

You could always split the picture into equal size parts in something like Photoshop, then blow up each to A4 and print individually and collect together afterwards

Microsoft "Picture it" has a facility for poster printing in which you specify the number of vertical and horizontal pages you need to make up your poster, when you've selected the poster size its simply a question of inserting your photo and sizing it .
However it will need to be a good quaility image pixelwise to stand being blown up to any reasonable size.
