Has anybody bothered to transplant the cable-activated reverse gate? I've worked out what the hole in the top of my gearbox is for! If not, how do you avoid the expensive second to reverse type shifts?

Didn't seem to have any need for cable linkages, just connect up the linkage to the gearbox and adjust so that there is travel available between all of the 'planes' at the gear lever (1/2, 3/4, 5/R).
I'd hope that not too much time should be lost when changing from second to reverse, unless you are doing autotests. If you've had a 180-degree spin, that's probably lost you most of the time.
It is possible to get reverse before the car has stopped though, to throw in a reverse flick and straighten the car up again - if you are lucky (I did this on a CCC sprint, for which the photographer only got the first part of the spin, not the - ahem - recovery and continuation of my run) :o

Chris,
You must have a 24v gearbox. That is the one which need the cable lift for the reverse.
The 12v gearbox does not have that feature.

I didn't realise this was only on the 24v gearbox. Can Jerry or David comment on their setup?

I am running a 24V gearbox in a 164 without the cable. The beauty of this newer box is that it has a synchronized reverse. My linkage has never been close to allowing an accidental reverse choice. So, I see the reverse lockout cable as optional.

That's what i was hoping to hear. Did you have to do anything with the box end of things, or just plug the hole with chewing gum?

I just plugged the hole. If there is an adapter in place remove it. The remaining hole was fitted with a drain plug from a broken transaxle.

I was quite happy to keep the reverse lock working - when I tried it, the synchro worked far too well - I could have got reverse at 40mph!
