Other than the different Alitalia liveries, the plain Blue French livery (not sure what the team was) and the white/red/black Pirelli liveries does anyone know of any Good (non tobacco or drinks) original liveries about. I've read that Chequered Flag garage ran a car but couldnt find a piccy.
Thanks

If you go to the main part of the StratosSuperSite and go into "Replicas" and the Replica Cars (or some such link) you'll find a list of cars and some pictures. The bottom one is John Duffin's transformer, which is in a Chequered Flag colour scheme. There is only one picture, but the little info piece mentions borrowing the photographic records of the garage owner of the time, so it might be possible to get some decent pictures if you are serious about using this painjob...
Good luck with your search.

There are quite a few other pictures in the Gallery on the main Stratos Supersite, and I've got loads more that I've been going to put on the site for AGES ..... but other commitments keep getting in the way. Maybe after I've finished with Abingdon, I'll stick some more up there.

Hi Andy,
I remember seeing the Chequered Flag Stratos in action on the Manx. ( one of my favourite events ) I think it was in 1979 maybe 1980, someone will be able to confirm this. Andy Dawson was driving with co-driver Kevin Videan? ( lucky git )
I am sure I have a couple of photo's in my archive mainly of the car at a stage start where we managed to have a chat with the crew. If you think they would be of interest, I could scan them and post them or e-mail them.
While we're on the subject of Chequered Flag, I seem to remember that they ran mainly on Minilite wheels and that they were 'specials'
Does anyone know if that was the case and if so, does a modern equivalent exist?
Cheers.

One way to find some of the less well-known paint schemes, besides using books, is to look at what is available on some of the scale models.
Two of my favourites are the Olio Fiat scheme (white/blue/yellow - also shown on the S.R.C. Yahoo Group web pages) and the BIC scheme (white/yellow). The Chardonnet blue comes next, but that's already been done very nicely by Phil Dolby.
You could always go for the Aseptogyl (sp?) scheme, if you want a bit of pink!
There are some alternatives in the Haynes Super Profile book, which used to be available really cheap (99p) but I guess costs a bit more these days.
The other consideration if you use a general scheme is whether or not to go for the exact design used on one particular rally. This is the approach taken for a lot of the scale models, and also some of the replica owners. Mind you, it makes it much harder to try and find the correct decals and paint scheme to use as they often changed from event to event, especially for the Flag Stratos!

Hi all,
Just thought I would post this picture which is of the chequered flag car on the front of an advertising brochure that I was lucky enough to have loaned to me last year.
I never met the guy who owned it, it came through a third party, but apparently he had something to do with the Chequered Falg team. I am hoping that when my car is finished I willhave the opportunity to meet and havea chat.
The centre two pages of the brochure have photo's of the car on fire.
Thought you might be interested.
cheers,

Well, it just so happens that I have been sorting out all my Stratos photos lately. Just off the top of my head, I can think of the following liveries:
Marlboro (Red & White) (A similar scheme was run by Jolly Club)
Early Alitalia (White with green, Rd & Back)
Late Alitalia (White with Green & Red)
Darniche's Total Car (Blue with yellow wheels)
Sirocco's Car (White with BIG Black Lancia Decal)
Pirelli (Black, White & Red)
Chequered Flag (Black & White with Yellow in several variations)
Fiat Olio (Blue, yellow & White) (I always liked this one)
Bic (Wite and Green or White & Orange)
Asyptogel (sp?) (White with colored stripes across nose)
There are many more. I have pictures of all of the ones I listed and many (but not all) of the others. Just let me know what interests you and I'll email or post the images.

John,
AndyBee isn't after it fot a Stratos Replica, so I don't think Phil Dolby's car has a bearing.
But I have to say, Phil's car is my favourite Stratos Replica - I love that paint scheme, and the white louvres really sets it off nicely.
However, when John Duffin finally comes back from Hong Kong and gets his Chequered Flag replica out, I'll be changing my mind.
I think your suggestion of looking at the models is a good one, and I had been going to suggest it to him.
What about letting him use your paint scheme - that's an original paint scheme, although not on an original Stratos. (PS Do I get a commission if you get a licencing fee? ):D
John Duffin's car is shown below:-

Stewart,
I think this was the picture you were trying to post.
It is one of many of the Chequered Flag Stratos that I have. I've been trying to find time to get them all sorted out and uploaded - maybe after Abingdon.

I have some video footage (not very long) of the Chequred Flag Stratos driven by Billy Coleman in the Galway International Rally 197?. There was alot of snow that year so it was well beaten, 5th overall, but the sound off the car is magic. If intreasted send me a tape and I will copy onto it for anyone. don't meantion copywrites please!

And a final one, following on from one of Dave's comments, is the following 'original Stratos livery' (admittedly based on a Gulf McLaren design, but hell - this is my colour scheme now!)

Wow,
been away for a few days and came back and a massive respose. Many many thanks
David kindly emailed me some photos as well. I think the chequered Flag design might be the "choosen" one. I do like John Rutter's (your a member of Hart MCarent you?? =snap!)
I also like the VS olio fiat livery as well. Once again many thanks and I will keep you posted on what I am doing
I'm at Abingdon on the weekend, Saturday pm onwards, taking part in the rally on Sunday, co-driving on Car No 105, a Union jack livererid Mini *(Link below for pics etc of the car)
Many thanks all, much appreciated

one more livery for your interest...this one is a spanish rally colour, but the sheer aggression of the colours means that I simply HAVE to paint mine this colour! Matte Black and Yellow..... :D
I don't know how to paste a picture into this, so here is the link to the picture...

Looks almost like a ah motorsport/jenvey throttle body setup, crossover manifolds with throttles then a couple of airbox/plenums?
Tryphon, can you shed any light on this?

I am personally against the use of the Kugelfischer setup.
It adds a lot of complexity for small advantages. The system is too archaic to be a definite plus.
Nothing will replace the sound and rush of these Weber 48s...

Good morning folks, some nice pictures on there. If you want to go further and see even more colours, go onto Ebay, and on the search at the top, type in the number , 130120747592, this is for a DVD on the Stratos that lasts an hour, the seller is redintegrale16v, the DVD cost £10.00, and £1.50 for P+P, and the coverage is SUPERB, there are cars in there that I have not seen in any books . After watching that film any body who says it does nothing for them, must have no emotions.
Also redintegrale16v ( all his DVDs are excellant quality and I only buy from him and almost all cost £10.00 )has a load of other lancia DVDs, and all brillant, as I think I have all of them.
Regards, Ian.

Here are some more pictures of the Kugelfischer injection on the Rino Fabbri car i scanned from an article about that car.
In Italian it sais:
Alimentazione a iniezione Kugelfischer, preparazione Facetti 1976, and some more beutifull Italian Language of which i don't understand a thing

wow. the sheer depth of technical knowledge in this forum is SCARY!
(impressive, too!)
The car I am getting has a 2 liter Lancia motor that Guy Croft has apparently worked some wizardry upon....I don't think I am going to be able to go for Total Authenticity and put a Ferrari + Kugelfischer setup into the engine bay anytime soon!
In fact, the colour scheme may be too aggressive for the HF2000 I hope to be finishing soon (the eternal optimist!) - but I love black cars, and this colour scheme sang out to me when I first clapped eyes on it.
Just have to build it now! :D :D
(with all that matt black, though, it will FRY in the summer....is it heresy to think of installing air conditioning?)

Tryphon,
Is the setup on your pic the same as the fabri one shown in Pimms pics? Your pic looks like slide throttles instead of butterflies? Unless they are fitted below the rectangular shaped sections.
Thanks for these pics guys.
tryphon
June 7th, 2007, 12:30 AM
The setup is the same. The difference is that the 1st car is not using the cast manifold as in the picture below so it had to use a do-it-yourself one.

Thanks Tryphon. Your image library has cleared that one up for me :)
It looks like the crossover manifold and throttle body setup in your pics is almost identical to the Jenvey/AH motorsports setup for tha alfa v6.

Have to say i have no concerns about building a Stratos with you guys about. The discussions here are brilliant! Just noticed however that some intakes are filterless. Maybe able to help here should anybody need any woven wire mesh (stainless) or perforated metals drop me a line and i'll help where i can. I used to run guaze filters between the ram pots and the carb body when i had a twin choke weber fitted to my mini mk2.
The essence of this is to put something rather than nothing in as dust or particles etc can wreek havoc with your bores - would this not be a fair comment? Most meshes have a free area of around 50% for an aperture of around 1mm. You can offset the reduction in flow by increasing the surface area of the mesh (this is where pleating of filter units comes in). Any member of this club needs a bit of mesh drop me a PM and i'll help. Larger requirements - well go through where i work - you'll still be looked after. Bit more info on our works site:

Offered only as help guys - nothing else! Steve :)

Also the PORTO 1978 - SG GIGANTE CHARDONNET-DARNICHE MAHE car? Was SG a fag company? As they're both Chardonnet cars, do they use signal blue as their base colour?

I have seen an "original" Chardonnet car in a private collection in italy and it's signal blau is different to my signal blau !!!!! so which is correct i have no idea !....
the only thing i know is that it's an Opel colour and it was produced for a very short period in the 70's, i dare say that the colour varied with the amount of Chianti consumed the night before !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...........

Hard to find, you may be lucky at: www.racecarsdirect.com
They have currently a 4 cylinder version and a 6 cylinder attached to a 4 cylinder F2 engine.
Try also Facetti as he uses them a lot.
Nothing's better than the Webers though...
