Mr Bates was fine when I spoke to him on the phone last year.

I need a replacement knob for the heater control. ChrisJ found them at Superformance last year but I can't find them now - they weren't obvious IIRC. There was also a min order charge.

edit: found the knobs here (http://www.superformance.co.uk/a-308/electrical.htm) on the Superformance site

Happy to help with GB from GB or Superformance if anybody wants...

I dont mind speaking to Grumpy, he's based not far from me so its relatively easy for me to go see him.

Are these not the Ferrari manual choke levers setup that get used IIRC?

Someone will have to PM me his number though as I lost it when I changed PC's.

So how many do we need in total? 4 if your in Scott?

Hi Matt, I'd also be interested. I have some crappy heater control between the seats, which tries (and fails) to operate a valve in the engine bay. Never worked properly in 4 years fiddling.

I assume, the Hawk heater valve is in the front, rather than back of the car.

Please put me down for one, and I can always sell it on if it is not suitable.

Cheers

Graham's a cracking bloke always been a good laugh when I've met him, its just a nickname. ;)

Graham has gone out of his way to help me twice with Stratos rep. related stuff. This was with no gain to himself.

What's happening now?

So far I think we have a need for 8 of these - but have all eight been ordered from Graham?

Sptwoman
April 5th, 2008, 10:48 AM
For my part, I had already order a number of items, including a heater control from Graham. Since I've been dealing with Chris J on a number of earlier purchased items we agreed that I'd order Chris 1 and add it to my items list... With me so far?? Anyway, this morning I rang Graham to advise him to add another control to my list. Due to this thread I advised him that there could be a rush!!! He has some left, cost and numbers I'm unsure of....

Thanks Allen,

You can give me the heater control at Stoneleigh if you like?

Dave started this thread, so to be fair he should get one of these controls.

Hi Chris, Yep can deliver @ Stoneleigh. I've PM'd Matt so he can sort the wholesale side...I'm sure he'll have Dave 2nd on the list!!

not visually accurate, but I use vacuum operated valves with electric actuators. suppose you could interface these to a period control if you wanted to make it really complicated!

I have a constant flow, bypass type heater valve that is electrically operated. Just got to make the lever operate a switch now  :D

I didn't want to seen as queue jumping!

Do we know how much these heater controls cost? That should have been the first question really?

Do you know if Graham still makes all the front and rear cover catches, cable pull and alignment bracketry?

Hi Chris, There's been no questions re money but will check tom... I'm not sure what Graham has in stock or makes, however I have an alignmet kit on my list for next week...

The heater controls are £75 each, you will need to ask if you want the fibreglass cover included. Graham thinks he's got a few left but will advise later...

Yes please Allen, if it's included price wise.

Photo of a Graham Bates supplied heater control (black knob shown isn't isn't a Ferrari one and a Ferrari knob probably isn't included. I'm guessing this is the fibreglass housing that the control is fitted in?:

Can somebody check the knob situation for certain with GB please?

Happy to organise another group buy for the knobs - not sure how firm a fit they are - the hole appears to be round in the plastic part, see below.

I have spoken to Graham today, albeit briefly as he was off out on personal matters.

He has confirmed that he has a number of these but the exact number he's not certain.

He has made a knob that fits onto the control lever, but he said that he's not entirely happy with it.

Turns out he lives even closer to me, his workshop is approx 10 miles away, his home is less than 5! Which is handy :)

I'm going to pop round and see him and get a picture of the whole kit and caboodle.

Graham is happy to do a group buy but details are to follow, I will set up a separate thread to sort out who is on the list for the group buy.

I take it then that you don't want the Ferrari part Matt, or does that depend on what the knob is like? GB might do the whole lot at an economical price.

Quite happy to do a GB if enough people want the correct knob to meet the min order (£20 IIRC). Knob is £2.70 +VAT carriage, etc.

I'd sugguest that if you can wait to see what Grahams version looks like, I'll take a picture of it and post it up.

His kit comes with it included, so people can make their minds up once they have seen both options.

Hi Guys

This is probably a bit off topic since you are all about to buy one. At the risk of being laughed off the forum I came up with another solution and tried to make one.

Long story short - was bored one winter night and as you do, was thinking what to make next. Whilst low on the “to do list” I thought I would have a go and make a prototype control lever - the idea being I would then get a friend with a mill to make a really good “professional” looking one or perhaps get one cast (may still do this).

Not the best photo I am afraid but none the less you’ll note a "replica heater control". This is basically the result of pinning a picture of an original to the garage wall and a couple of hours work with 2 bits of hand polished 3mm alloy glued together. The control face is essentially two ovals, one drilled and filed hollow and the other slotted using a jig saw and flat file.
The internal mechanism was cut from 2mm steel plate again with the jig saw and filed to shape. The only trick was matching the lever movement to the control valve in the front of the car to make sure the heater could be turned full off or full on (and in between). The fiberglass mounting was made actually made using my unused roof air vent as the mold then trimmed accordingly. Internal bits include a couple of bolts holding the mechanism together and cable clips cannibalized from some old Triumph thing.

It’s now covered with black leather to match the dash, seats etc. Although hard to see (not deliberate) the colored bits are actually insulation tape. The red and blue dots cover two screws that hold the face on to the fiberglass mount all carefully trimmed with a scalpel (no NHS training here). If the tape deteriorates I will try melting a colored ceramic finish onto it.

Yes I agree a bit agricultural in the construction method but so far I have been asked twice where I bought it.

Next step is to source “the knob”. I will wait until someone confirms the above link as “the knob” to go for and will either try buying it direct or join the group purchase. If post $20 would someone be prepared to post it to NZ for me?

Cheers

Steve
