It does but it's tight!

Roger, just noticed something different from your engine picture, which seems to improve things a tiny bit when compared to my engine.

The oil filler cap seems to be 'higher up' on the cam cover than it is on my car, since in your picture it appears to be somewhere just above the line of the spark plugs. In my car, the filler cap is mounted down near the lower edge of the cam cover, nearer to the front bulkhead and chassis rail in the HF3000.

Is that really the case, or am I just confused by the appearance in the photo? If so, is this a standard cam cover or did you modify it by moving the filler neck to a higher position which gives better access?

It's not really that important, as I can still get a funnel into my filler quite easily, but it would be better if it were nearer the top. The dipstick is much more of a nuisance, being tucked away at the front of the engine.

Cheers

I will have a look next time I'm up at the barn.

Things should be able to be simplified on the plumbing side soon as I will no longer need the heater circuits and by using a combined swirl pot/header tank i can do away with the link to the old header tank.

Highly observant John, Yes the oil filler is inbetween the two plug tubes. Which must be why I've never had a particular problem topping up.

The dipstick tube is quite soft and I simply bent mine round to exit at the front of the engine and fixed it beside the water pump outlet. It could do with being a bit longer but is a lot easier to find working from the side where you can at least see it (or at least I could before I fitted the second oil cooler!)

I too had the oil filler in a silly place, although on the later 24V engines at least its toward the end of the head. I cut off the filler neck from an old cam cover and attached it with a length of curved rubber radiator hose to bring the neck up to a useful height and angle. (Still doestn't stop me tipping the oil all over the motor but it looks more serious!)

Has anybody found a way of changing the oil filter without it running down all over the driveshaft?
