Hi,
I was about to change the bearing on the intermediate drive shaft (it sounds a little rough when spun by hand) and I'm shocked to see that the manual suggests that I need to change the whole intermediate shaft assembly.
Has anyone changed this bearing ??
If so, can you offer any advice about how to go about and any complications.
Regards

Seems a bit OTT. I'd have thought the bearing would be a press fit on the shaft.

Chris,
It does seem way OTT. If you've got the 164 manual on CD and look under "axle shafts", it clearly states that you need to replace the whole assembly.
One problem is that the bearing is at the flange end of the shaft and you'd need a set of pullers about 400mm long to pull it off, there's also little room behind the bearing to "get hold of".... Finally there is a funny collar immediately in front of the bearing that looks like it may get in the way of pulling it off.
I'm hoping that someone has done it before and can pass on "the secret", because the manual is not giving anything away !

Nothing a chisel & angle grinder won't shift!

The shaft, bearing and "protection" are 3 separate parts on the parts disc. £180, £25, £2 respectively.

Try asking on the 164 technical forum, or trawling their archive.

I do like the "high tech" solutions offered on the forum ;)

Thanks Chris,
Info much appreciated. I'll have a closer look and probably get the angle grinder out like you suggest. Nothing ventured, nothing gained I guess.
Cheers

Andy,
I will have a chat with my friendly Alfa parts people and see what they say - but I'm off to France for a little break this week so there may be a delay.

Thanks for all the comments / advice.
There is an additional collar pressed onto the shaft in front of the bearing, so removal was beyond my simple garage kit and difficult if not impossible even with an angle grinder.
Took it into work and got it back 5 minutes later with collar and bearing removed... workshop press, easy.
I then took the bearing to a local supplier who had one ex-stock for £15. It's a very standard bearing.
The bearing I took off was an SKF and the bearing number is:-
62206-2RS1
back to the workshop tomorrow to get them to put it all back together again !
