Hi everyone,

Burbling up the M40 on Friday, the wife and I were singing "Something kind of ooh" as heard in Phoo Action :D

Now I have seen a few pics of cars, including originals, with what looks like radio aerials on the back and door speakers. So, for those long straight motorway moments where the engine note doesn't change and there are no bends to play with, I was considering something like an MP3 player + 200W/channel amp + speakers.

Does anyone here have a stereo fitted?

Is it at all worth it, given the cabin noise?

Guilty as charged. I've got an old Panasonic plus multidisc for those long motorway drags. Head unit is in the rear bulkhead, bass speakers behind the seats and tweeters at the side of the rear windows, all pretty unobtrusive and surprisingly effective at drowning out the road and wind noise up to 80 (on the continent) but after that officer I've no idea :p :p :p

It rarely gets used on any other type of road, too busy concentrating and enjoying the engine notes!

Kenwood head unit in the car, a 6 disc CD changer in the boot. Pair of mid range speakers in the doors, pair of tweeters in the A pillar lower extensions and some big LF units behind the seats.

Works OK at the sort of speeds & revs you might contemplate listening to music at.....

Guess it'll depend a lot on how much soundproofing you have as well.

i had an Alpine head, 6-play, 10" sub in the passenger footwell plus 9"x6" in doors, 250W and 230W amps respectively (had = past tense, as in thieving scumbags, screwdrivers and crappy X1/9 doorlocks)

my exhaust is rather loud (110dB at Castle Combe, banned from the track) but in traffic, M-way, the stereo could drown out the noise sufficiently to enjoy it (not suitable for radio 3 or orchestral music).

the next stereo will again be ca 500-750W, still got the 6x9s, designing the car to fit around a 12" sub!

could be why i'm a bit mutton now. . .

Yep, I'm as sad as the rest.
I have a nothing-special CD unit in the transverse frame btween my knees in the CorseI (only place I can reach it when bolted into the 6-point). Speakers, just 2, both mid-range, one in each door liner. Didn't put a multi-changer in; wish I had. Usually play the MP3 through it these days.

Scumbags with screwdrivers are obviously a worry, hence I was looking at cheap speakers from Maplins and an MP3 player (possibly even using my phone to make sure I remove it when I leave the car). Would be nice to stealth the speakers as much as possible too.

I notice Maplins have a sale on their sound level meters too, might pick one up at the same time to get some idea which tracks I am allowed on :)

I should add; I have to use earphones for the Satnav, but that's the engine. I don't need earphones for the stereo til well above motorway speeds probably, Officer.

I'm thinking about dropping the head unit for just an amp and iPod doc. Got to work out exactly what's needed but reckon it'll keep things simple.
