Thanks Guy and Rob.

They do seem to come in different designs? The ones I've just taken off where different on each side of the car. 'Managed to cut and grind both old nuts off quickly and without even touching the CV threads this time.

Why Grind chris? my hub nuts on all six of my units, ( 2 on the car + 4 spare) came off with my air impact gun with very little trouble!

I've never yet managed to remove a hubnut once it had been properly torqued and staked. I've usually gone with a carefully drilled small pilot hole through one side of the nut above the stake channel and gradually enlarged it before splitting with a cold chisel.
Perhaps I ought to invest in a compressor and air impact gun? Or maybe just a few more drill bits!

Yes Stephen, that's the proper way, but I'd have had to undo all the inner CV bolts to take the shafts to the impact gun/compressor. I think strictly speaking, it isn't best practice in any case to stake/swage the nuts twice (use them twice). There was no down side for the old CVs as they were undamaged, so trashing the nuts was the easiest way.
