Is that Carson Automotive Engineering on the side? - Hugh Carson, owner of CAE who built Corse kits before it went to Napiersport.

Hi Roy,
The car is indeed a Corse. It is a Corse "I". It was originally built by Steve Greeenwood (Litton Cars) for a customer called Gary Midwinter I believe, it was later sold on to Bernard Rooney who drove the car with Hugh Carson as his co driver. The car was later sold to South Africa.
The car was powered by a specced up 2.5l Honda V6 breathing through triple down draughts & was pretty darned quick according to those who went out in it. I did see some video footage of it going round Knockhill circuit & it looked quick & extremely well balanced/composed.
The car is also notable as I believe it to be the very first Corse "I" & ran a couple of different rear engine cradles & top wishbone arrangements before it became what you see in the pic.
Hope this helps.

Click on the cutaway drawing, and you'll see the car in its Gary Midwinter guise.

Interesting stuff there. I noticed the exhaust was of a strange desigh, it has two silencers going acrossways and what looks like two more on the tailpipes. Alot of silencers on such a short system.

If you've to get down to 97dBa they'll be necessary. I've just bought a sound meter and am looking forward to seing what repacking my silencer has done, ( if anything!)

I think Adrian Jackson has a stradale with Honda/Rover 2.7 on triple Webers as well - LHD green car, not seen for years! And Mark Cowling too? Both courtesy of Geoff Turton in Widnes

They must be the only two left in the country now, Guy?

Although there was a dark blue one with round arches, roof scoop, quad pod and Technomagnesio coffin spokes fitted with a Honda V6. I've never seen it though, (only in a photo).

There was a guy called John Michaels who had a red Corse "I" with a Stradale style body which also had a 2.7/2.5 Honda also with triple Webers. This car has now been sold on but i don't know who the new owner is.

Hi Craig,
that car now belongs to Steve Ellis from Luddendenfoot, (Sowerby Bridge).
He ran the car for a year in sprints but has now abandoned the Honda unit in favour of An MG V6 and Quaife sequential box.
When I last spoke to him he had the engine plumbed in and it was not too far away from a run. I expect to see him out in the car in the new year.

my Honda V6 car still exists too - only doesn't look like a Stratos anymore

I spoke at length to Gary Midwinter when i was looking into which kit to buy, so i blame him for getting me into all this mess ;)

Not that i'm disappointed - it goes sideways much better than a GT40

Does anyone know if Steve has this completed yet?

MG V6 and Quaife sequential box - sounds very interesting.

Dave, I saw Steve at Chatsworth last year. He seemed very upbeat about the project. 'Sounds like it's a bit of a screamer compared to the Alfa V6s? I don't know how far on he is with it now?

Is it a 2.5litre V6 from an MG that he is using?

I know someone who was running a KV6 2.5 developed by QED, and he claimed it was getting over 300bhp. The car was very fast in a straight line, so the engine was definitely very powerful.

Dave, It's whatever the last MG touring cars had.

I'm not sure if it's actually out of a Touring Car?, but I remember Steve saying that he'd got hold of an engine with the special spec. block, and he told me the story that many of these blocks were lost among the rest of the production Rover blocks (that they were based on).

Dave,

Steve phoned me a while back for some info, cant for the life of me think what it was now anyway we had the usual long chat, his car sounds the dogs dangles, He had it built by QED if i remember correct using one of the motorsport blocks. Seemingly Rover had a run of special blocks build then ended up fitting them to there last run of cars at the time. QED told him how to identify one and after a long search he located one in a breakers that QED rebuilt to a spec giving about 250 bhp if i remember correct.
He choose the engine because he knew he could easily get a quaife box. seemingly the same combination routinely end up in Elise's

If I remember correctly, isn't this KV6 engine exceptionally light?

So, Steve will have a weight-advantage too ..... get's better and better. :)

John

Steve's engine has the Cosworth casting block. yes it's 2.5litre and he already has the logbook. The Scrutineer had a look at the car and as soon as Steve got the engine and number he got his logbook!
Unfortunately Steve does not really do the Internet, although I think he monitiors what goes on here (Hi Steve!) from time to time.
Not spoken to him for far too long so I'll try him this week and report back.
I think I'm right in saying that QED supplied cams for the engine and advice on spec, but Steve has scewed it all together himself.

Sounds brilliant. I'd love to see this in action.

As he has log-book, tell him about the South Scotland Time Trial thread.

Be fantastic for him.
