I´m looking around for a steering rack that fits to the hawk kit. A colleague told me the Triumph Spitfire steering rack is the same than the Herald steering rack for the Hawk Stratos.

Found this one on ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=150173230349&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=005

Can anyone confirm this .... will this rack fit to the Hawk Kit?

They are the same, see here (http://www.canleyclassics.com/catalogue.asp?id=vitesse1600_steering&scale=small).

The Vitesse 2 litre and GT6 have a lower ratio but are also the same dimensions - you probably don't want this ratio: it's for the heavier six cylinder Triumph engine.

Canley Classics are a good firm to deal with if you do not buy the eBay rack. I have used them many times for Triumph parts.

You need part 305931. You can also see 305931R which means a reconditioned rack. An exchange unit is required - but of course you do not have one.

Thanks a lot for the info Peter!

I didn´t buy the rack on ebay. I found another company called Bastuck.

They sell a new left handed steering without an exchange unit for 138 Euro and i´m going to order it today ....

Is that the one called Lenkung ? I'm going to need one myself in the future.

Either that or the Canley firm.

Yes, it is the part L63SPT, called "Lenkung neu, ohne Spurstangenendkopf" and it comes without the tie rods. I ordered it an hour ago and can send you some pictures and more information when has arrived ....

Yes Spitfire the same, GT6 is wider in total by 1" (only on the threaded ends - rest exactly the same) but can still be used or threads cut down if needed.
Moss Europe do new racks (including a the quicker 2.6 L2L) and the U/J's at reasonable prices.

Ah. Didn't know about that Rob, thanks. Does the GT6 comment apply to the Vitesse Mk I and Mk II 2 litre models too?

Hiya
Can't remember now, maybe... Moss will tell you that one. The GT6 are defo. there may be another thread on that somewhere. The wider ones can still be used though. The thread ends will just need shortening slightly. The main thing is that the rack gear and the inner ball joints are the same dimensions.
You do need the Hawk 'lock limiter' though due to the designed position of the racks on the chassis and the column position. See earlier thread too. if you don't then you will have much more lock one way than the other and the inner joints may not be centralised causing bump steer issues.
