I'm still scratcing my head about where to put some components, and my eye has landed on the space between the door catches and the fuel tank, between the outer skin and the inner. (We're talking Hawk here). I reckon I could fit a Red Top battery in there, which would save space elsewhere, and move weight forward - OK, not as far forward as putting it in the front. The only drawback seems to me that it is a bit vulnerable to side impact, but they are claimed not to leak even when damaged. Any views or comments?

Fuel & Battery in such close proximity!
If my memory serves me right did Lancia not loose a few stratos to fire! Interesting that all the pics of works cars i have seen show the battery well to the rear and quite high up. Anybody know why?

You'd easily fit a Red Top in quite a variety of small spaces. I run a Rep Top 25 on my car, and it's really small.

Don't have to worry about the battery being close to the petrol tank, as it's sealed.

Anyway, with tanks in the wings, (Hawk and Allora) there's more danger of damaging the tank in an impact, and any fuel spillage being ignited by a hot exhaust.

I think it's there for space reasons. If you want a spare under the bonnet, there's nowhere else to put it. With a vertical bulkhead, as in some Hawk replicas, there would be space behind a seat; I'm planning on putting my ECU / engine relays and firex there though.

PS Yes!
