View Full Version : Door Latch

I'm about to fit the door catch & was wondering if there are any dimensions for the possition of the catch on the door. I've look through some old threads but they seem to consentrate on the receiver on the tub assuming the catch on the door is in the correct possition. From the photos I've taken it appears that pivot point of the catch is centred in the middle of the recess in the door, can anyone confirm this?

Can't confirm it for you, I'm afraid, but I think that it will be mostly determined by the position of the outer door handle and the way in which the internal lever acts on the lock mechanism.
If that makes sense.

Thanks John. My problem is that I have two sets of rods for the door lock to latch, both dfferent lengths and don't know which are right.

I can try checking my car later, but reckon others may have a better fit/alignment.
Any answers out there?

Hi,
From memory... Location of the latch on the door is obvious on the moulding.
Location of handle is as door recess.
I cut as this and minor adjustments to link rods got good operation.
I had to make a new rod to connect inside door handle to latch.
On my car there is a difference between Near Side and Off Side... Off side rod was easy to make and fit, near side was a pig (it fouled the inner door skin) and I had to fab an offset to get a good reliable action.
Once the handle / latch were on the door I offered up the door striker and took some dimensions to the inside of the door face and then noted this versus tub when the door was in it's ideal closed location.
Mark up and drill holes.. both sides different. I didn't get it bang on first time, so ended up opening the holes up a bit to allow fore / aft and up / down movement to suit... I was only a few millimeters out, so opened up hole is not unsightly.
As a word of warning I got all my doors nicely lined up.... When I screwed on the inner skin it pulled them out of alignment by about 3-4mm. Worth watching and meant that my hinges had to be adjusted to suit.
Hope this makes sense.
Andrew
P.S. I was using FIAT X1/9 latch, striker and handle and FIAT 850? spoon type door handles on the inside.

Use plasticine on the frame - the latch will mark it when you close the door and give you an accurate position.

I have a couple of photos that may help, pm your email and I'll send them over - I do not have any software to resize at the moment.

Hi Shaun
Here is a freebee
I have Windows XP - try this
On your computer, click Programs, Accessories and choose PAINT.
Click File and Open your photo then choose ATTRIBUTES, change the size, to say 500x500 then save as a new name.
Try attaching the copy to your forum message.
You may have to experiment by rotating the image to keep the bit you want us to see.
I am sure there are other easy no cost ways of achieving the same.
I hope this helps
Cheers
Steve

Hi,
Good feeling to get opening / closing doors.
I clearly remember fitting mine... Mothers Day 3 and a bit years ago.
I'm sure my wife remembers it well... Hanging onto the door as the kids watched !
