Hi all,

There is an Lancia Thema for sale here in Holland, only 150.000 km.
Its a 3 ltr V6 , don't know if its 12V or 24 V, did the Thema only have 12V or also 24V like the Lancia Kappa. Does the 12V also have the Lancia letters on the plenum and is it much different from the Alfa 12V?

Just looking for a spare engine and maybe spare brakes :)

They did a 2.8 then 3.0 V6 from the power outputs I guess it's 12v (168bhp)

The 3.0ltr version is 175bhp and is 12v
The Kappa version is 24v
The front cam cover has Lancia 3.0 V6 on it on a removable plate.
This of course becomes the rear cam cover once installed into a Stratos

I don't understand this. The cam covers aren't interchangeable on the 24V Alfa. Is the Kappa different in this respect?

If front now becomes back, why would you want to put the engine in facing backwards?

The cam covers aren't interchangeable on the 12v either. What I mean is that what is at the front when in a front wheel drive configuration automatically becomes the back once the engine is moved to a rear wheel drive configuration.

No it doesn't. You'd have 5 everse gears and one forwards.

Think this is from the point of view of looking into the engine bay - from the front or rear of the car. It's nearest the viewer when in the front of the Thema, and furthest from the viewer if looking from behind the Strat engine bay.

But since you mostly view the Strat engine bay from the side, it's a moot point.

The early Thema V6 had the PRV motor. Not at all what you'd want I suspect....visually very different from the 12V Alfa motor. Chain driven cams IIRC.

Is that this sort of motor froma 75? dismantled one on fleaBay (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ALFA-ROMEO-2-5-V6-ENGINE-ANCILLARIES-FACTORY-MANUAL_W0QQitemZ130158059063QQihZ003QQcategoryZ103 70QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)

Shouldn't think so. The V6 in the 75 is the same basic unit we fit to the kits.

Alfa created this 2.5-litre, 12-valve V6 and launched it in the 'Alfa 6', an exec saloon. I think this ran on downdraught carbs of some sort.

They then fitted it into the Alfa GTV6 coupe, with a rear-mounted transaxle, running on Bosch Jetronic injection. (I had one of these)

The Alfa 75 was next to receive the engine, I think initially as 2.5 litre, but later as the 3.0 litre, 12-valve version, with essentially the same transaxle but now with better gear linkage and lmiited slip diff. (had one of these too)

The Alfa SZ 'Il Mostro' was a special, based on the 75 running gear but with composite body panels forming a neat two-door coupe. (would love one of these)

The Alfa 155 received the 2.5 litre V6 too, in a front-drive setup (one of these fitted to Phil Jordan's Hawk HF).

Then came the Alfa 164, which has 12v and 24v versions, and also a 4wd version. Bosch Motronic now the engine management system (maybe for 155 too)

Somewhere in this list should also be the Alfa GTV coupe and Alfa Spider. The GTV (and probably 164 too) was available in Italy with a 2-litre, twin-turbo V6 for tax break purposes. Some were imported to the UK. I am assuming this was based on the same V6, but could be entirely wrong about that.

Come the Alfa 156, the 2.5 litre V6 was available in 24v (relatively gutless) form, with fly-by-wire throttle, etc (had one of these too).

Then there is/was the Alfa 166, 147, GTA, GT range using 2.5/3.0/3.2 versions of the 24v V6.

The new Alfa Brera and Alfa Spider have a different V6 engine, being a joint project with [I believe] GM. Not as soulful as the old engine, apparently. Probably more economical, in manufacture and operation, though.

That's my recollections of Alfa V6 engine history, if that is of any interest at all...

Concur that one looks like basically the same as the 12V 164 motor. You can just make out the form of the head in it's plastic wrapper as the same, and the block looks familiar.
I'll scan a picture of the PRV motor from my Thema manual if I can remember!
