Has anybody succeeded in keeping a spare in the front and having the battery / firex in there? It is not looking a goer to me.

The question you have to ask yourself, is do I feel lucky?
Assuming you can get a spare tyre under the front in the first place the likelyhood is that it will only fit the front of the car, especially if you've got a group 4 car! And, assuming the spare will fit either hub will the punctured wheel and tyre fit under the front or is it going to have to go on the passenger seat? Even a 205 section tyre is big!
I say sod it, fit the battery up front, the fire extinguiser, ABS control unit, a couple of gallons of spare fuel, a tyre compressor, a can of aerosol tyre puncture repair gunge, an emergency warning triangle, jack and a litre of oil instead.

I do long distances and have got a 125x15 skinny spare under the front of mine. With a bit of pipe-rerouting there would also have been room for a battery, although I was quite happy with it at the rear side (standard Corse I location.)

A Varley Red Top 25 battery will give you more power than a standard car battery, and is a fraction of the size, and it's not that much more expensive than a standard battery.

Would it cope with a spotlamp pod too?

I would think that is more down to the alternator.

Specs of Red Top V25

Size (mm) 182x77x168
Cap/AH 16
Cranking Current 625A

Can be mounted at any angle, even upside down.

Yes, it should be up to the alternator, but I had problems on an RS1600i coz the alternator couldn't cope with the drain of all the 6 lights - the battery recharged on the road sections, but very long stages were a problem!

What is the preferred spare wheel for the Hawk? Alfa 156 or is this too big a diameter if it ever had to be used in anger? Is there a preferred option to get through the SVA? Will eventually use Gerry's coffin spokes as standard

Appreciate your thoughts

Spare wheel is not a requirement for SVA so dont worry about it. :)

Dave is that a dry cell then? Thats a very small battery. I know they can cusome build 'em cos my mates got a Willys Jeep and they make high spec batteries for extreme conditions not sure whether they are wet or dry cell tho.

For anyone building a HAWK V6.... The kit comes with battery tray and support on the rear near-side corner of the engine bay. All looked to be good for installation of a standard battery, until I fitted the air intake manifold to the engine.

It clashes with standard battery by about 75mm.

Varta Red Top 25 solves the problem and works very well.

Anyone need an almost new lead acid battery??

Up front, i have battery, abs pump, snail blower and ducting plus scoop, air horns, washer bag and i can still fit a 156 space saver ;) Plus some other odds and ends like re circulating heater valve, space for an oil container of sorts etc etc.

Your brake set up isn't where most Hawks have them - it looks much lower. How's that then?

Thats only the ABS. The pedal box goes under the dash, a little like an original but with longer pedals for more braking effort ;)

Is that modification by Hawk or stratv6?

Thats one of mine Chris. Pedal foot pad to pivot about 100 mm longer than stock. I'm trying to finish a couple of bits and pieces then i'll be building the mk2 improved lightweight version ;)
