This is EXACTLY what you need if you want to run an aftermarket ECU like an Emerald on a 12v 164. It allows you to junk the distributer and run a Wasted Spark setup. It took me almost 3 months to find one for my setup.

Stand well back now to avoid the rush.....

Tim's right - the Bosch coil is ideal for wasted spark conversions as the 4 pole AMP plug is easy to get hold of. I used a Ford coil from a V6 Mondeo on mine....but the plugs are impossible to get so I had to wire some tails to it, then terminate with some 2-pole AMP plugs (well, plug & socket to avoid confusion).

I think the Vauxhall V6 uses the same Bosch coil, but I doubt the HT leads would fit as well as these will ;)

May I recommend MegaJoltLiteJr ?

I'm sure it is well known - but still.
I built one for my 4cyl Alfa Junior Zagato. (with 45 webers)
But you can also get them for 6 & 8 cyl applications.

For those that haven't heard of it - you use Ford EDIS coil packs and ignition module. Toghether with the 36-1 tooth wheel and pickup. Add either TPS or MAP sensor. You then use a small unit which you either build your self (mostly soldering) or buy it ready made. This unit connects with your EDIS module and a PC. With the PC you program your tables as you wish. The cost is well below most similar systems. And should the MJLJ-unit fail - the EDIS automatically runs in limp-home mode with 10dg BTDC spark.

I bought a used kit with leads, coilpack and module and built the MJLJ-unit myself. Not to costly at all.

Or.... you build or buy your own MegaSquirt and add programmable ignition to it. Also very cheap solution if you compare what you get for your money. I built my own MS to yet another car. I even built mine MS into a Bosch ECU box and reused the harness instead of the DB39-contact that MS ususally uses. That way one can just reuse the harness that engine hopefully comes with. This is what I'll be doing with my 164 engine for my Hawk.

Hi Patriq,

I'm aware of the MegaXXX family and maybe 20 years ago I'd have gone that route...but these days I'd rather go with a tried and tested system. I'm not worried about the electronics aspect of it - I've been designing/building/repairing complex electronics systems for over 20 years, it's just I'd rather have a system with 'proper' support. I do know people who have successfully used these systems on their cars (all Ford Zetecs as it happens, but that's only the small group I know). I'm a real Emerald fan for a number of reasons, but mostly due to the support they give. Their current product is very mature and very capable. It's not too expensive either. YMMV and all that, but personally I'd not consider anything else for my own projects. At the moment, I know of 4 12V Alfa V6 motors running on Emerald systems. In chronological order of firing up, Lionel's EVO, Tim's Corse I, Gary Lomas' Corse S and my Corse S.

We also have an Emerald system on the Westfield (a Zetec again) and were able to work round a problem with the throttle bodies I used by running a very retarded ignition at idle. I understand that the EDIS won't go less than 8 degrees?? Wouldn't have worked for me, but that may be a rare situation.

I understand why people are keen about the MegaXX idea, but it's not for me. :)
