A question for those who have recently had a car PASS the SVA test..... (or at least not failed on seatbelts)

Did your car have 3 or 4 point harnesses fitted for the test, and if so, which type?

I am asking this one because I intend to fit Willans 4 point harnesses with clip-on eyebolt fittings at the top and it just dawned on me that although these belts are E2 approved, they might not satisfy the SVA gods.....

I could use bolt-on fixings but would prefer not to.

Thank you.

I donīt know how this is in UK, but in Germany I had to take out the Sabelt 4 point belts and get them replaced by something with a buckle having the release button fitted in, without the risk of releasing by chance (red knob like in ordinary cars). I have now OMP-road-legal 4 point harnesses, not looking so "race-styled", but much more comfortable to close.

I could imagine that the approvals are handeled very similar in UK.

Hi Chris
I doesn't seam to mention the clip type fastening to the eyebolts in the SVA manual. My impression is that this area is not a problem so long as they can see that the threads are welded inserts and are strong enough for the job.

I believe that the main area for concern is the Buckle as mentioned above. If you've gone for 'e' marked harneses though you should not have a problem with this.

Perhaps an SVA station can give you their thoughts?

I'd be interested in the clarification as I've gone down the FIA harness route which has the twist type buckle and may not get through. The book is a bit vague in this area and says it just needs to be able to be released by one hand. It goes through loads of stuff for road type belts and then just says or an equivelent racing type harness.

I'll have another read and digest again tomorrow.

Chaps,

Thank you for your thoughts. I was reading the SVA manual myself the other evening (great insomnia cure) and as you say, there are no specific comments on the buckle or attachments other than the usual generic 'of suitable type' stuff. I was planning on using the more road-style button release anyway so suspect this will be satisfactory.

I'll go ahead and use them and report back in the fullness of time....

Cheers

Chris,

I think I have a set of Willans 4 point with a push buckle release, which were in my car for about 2 weeks.

You're welcome to borrow those for your SVA if this helps.

That way you could buy whatever you want to use long term, and fit those after the SVA.

Let me know if you'd like to do this, and I'll arrange getting them to you. (Just got remember where I put them).

David,

That's jolly decent of you! Thank you - that sounds ideal.

No panic - I haven't built it yet of course, but it's nice to get these things sorted out early rather than late.

I am trying to organise my shopping lists at the moment so I can get going when I come back from holiday in May, so if you could bring them along to Abingdon (with the 10,000 other things you have to remember/organise/pack into the back of the transit) that would be just fine ;)

Cheers

Chris

No problem, Chris.

BUT, you better remind me during the week before Abingdon, just in case.

Assuming I can remember of course....
