I have been trying to come up with a Stratos Livery that I like for quite some time now. The red & white Marlbo livery is good but I don't care for the sponsor. The Alitalia is good too but not very original. I like the Fiat Olio but my other half doesn't and I'd kind of like something in more 'Italian' colors. John Whalley's reverse Alitalia scheme is closer to what I was thinking but I didn't want to copy his design outright. An artist friend was kind enough to help me mock up the following photo the other day.

What do you guys think?

I've always taken a shine to this one from ALMS/GT racing.
I've seen a few variations on the colors with Blue on top and also a Red front spoiler. Always reminds me of the old Ducati racing colours of the seventies, or the Castrol schemes.

Nice bottom half, but the top half is too obviously Alitalia, given you wanted to get away from it. IMHO

I do like the Alitalia livery, I just didn't want to look exactly like everyone else. Personally I think the reversed colors (more red & white) look beter than the original ones (more green and white) but that's just my opinion. I had actually thought of doing an exact reverse of the original livery but decided not to when I saw that John W's had already done it (more or less). One thing I really like about my car now (sort-of Marlboro livery) is the way the white band runs down the side with the red above and below. I decided to try widening the reversed Alitalia stripes to the chine at the top of the door and leave the air-foil solid white. (The original livery leaves the top of the door white and has stripes on the air-foil.) The problem that you can't see in the picture is that the stripes on the nose are wider than the tops of the doors. I haven't quite decided how to handle that but I liked this look because it resembled the most famous original livery but is still a bit different.

Is there a photo on the net anywhere?

Here's a nice pic of the original Alitalia livery for comparison.

Doh - sorry - I'm posting between tasks at work and read that one wrong. You can see a picture of John W's car in the picture of the garage at the bottom of the main page on his web site:

Hi John
Sorry I think I misread your original post, I thought you were still looking for ideas.
I think the mixture you have come up with looks good. Captures the Alitalia feel but with your own touch.

You might get a geek somewhere telling you that it's not how the originals were, but you're always going to get that whatever you do if you want to be a bit different.

Good job you'll be to put them straight;)

PS
did you ever produce any of the Squdra Course Tee shirts I saw a long time ago on a competition type thread?

Glad you like the livery - the Ferrari livery is good too but I wanted a bit more white. If I remember correctly, lancia reserverd the color white for the competition cars.

I have the image for the Squadra Corse shirt all ready but my printer is broken. I asked my better half today if she'd print them for me in exchange for a new ink cartridge. She agreed. Don't know why I didn't think of that before. I'll try to get some made next week.
