Can someone confirm the dimensions for a suitable trailer for a GP4 strat? The issue is with the rear 12" wheels and the overall width of the rear wheel base. I measure it in excess of 6'... I therefore think I require a short fat one

Think Brian James can mod their's for you. Personally, i'm looking for a flat plant trailer with the smallish size wheels that are under the bed. No problems with Carlos Fandango's ;)

You would be surprised at what size of trailer a Stratos can fit on, This is mine the day I towed it to Abingdon in 2003 10 foot 5 inches long by 5 foot 4.
Did add a couple of 9 inch boards to each side :)

Same thinking for me Stevie, i don't want a car transporter thats as wide as a bus. I'm thinking a 14 foot by six foot flat bed with the wheels below to kep it narrower. should fit on the drive too.

Of course the other part of the equation is the larger the trailer the bigger the tow car needs to be and sad to say my trusty Legacy Turbo, king of tow cars was sold on friday after close to nine years of service boo hoo :) But what to replace it with all suggestions welcome but it needs to do 30mpg and not 20mpg :D
This size of trailer is not good for marital relations in my house :( but it will carry anything you could wish :D :D

The 348 never did owt for me, prefer the 355. Have you seen the price of used 355's these days?

Don't mind doing a few jobs if the price is right. What needs fixing? Brakes, decking, elecs etc?

Will need brakes, tyres and wheel bearings lastly as its been a real pain to move I would suggest a jockey wheel. Never could persude its owner to fit one but then he usually leaves it attched to his flat bed transporter

I'm with you John.
I can never get my head round why a 355 looks so much better than a 348, when it's basically the same bodyshell?
They are good value aren't they?, if you can afford that sort of thing?
It would have to be a 308 GTB for me, carbs and a roof.

Getting back to the thread subject, I've had a Stratos on the back of an Ifor Williams that was narrower than the one in Stephen's photos. The type where the four trailer wheels are about flush with the sides of the trailer, and you can't see it in the van's mirrors!
With 9" rears it only just fitted. 12" rears would be overlapping the edge of the size trailer that I'm talking about. The size of trailer in these photos would be plenty wide enough for the rear end of a group four Stratos. A 348 isn't what you'd call narrow track?!

I use a Brian James beaver tail with long ramps, they custom made to my dimensions and the car fits on fine with Grp4 wheels and about 4" to spare either side

Dont think 6ft 3" will be wide enough for 10 or 12" rears, you could fit space saver type set up for transport but its a bit of a pain changing wheels plus you need space to carry the 345 rears, but I am sure you have thought about all this so in the words of Mick the great I'll get me coat :D

As for a suggestion for a suitable legacy replacement for Susit, can I put forward the good old Toyota hilux? I have the 'Invincable' version - crew cab for all the family, full leather, alloys, drug dealer blacked out rear windows etc. Does 40mpg, doesn't know it's got 2t behind it (I'm in the construction trade and it regularly has 1600kg in an ifor williams behind it - allegedly officer) pop it in 4wd and it's great. never got it stuck yet, dispite some heroic tries (lake district + 6ft snow), and The top gear crew couldn't kill one. Best thing this side of a vx landcruiser for towing, but they do do 20mpg....

Why wait until I have a bid on eBay for a car, you guys have got it in for me, go on admit it
Does it really do 40 mpg? Must look it up in parkers. Will know tomorrow evening if I have a trip to the deep south to collect a new ( well decidedly 2nd hand) tow car. :)
Thanks for the suggestion

Always get 40mpg on the trip from home (cumbria) to louth (lincs), suprised myself at first, but it is quite slippery, not too heavy - 1700kg is a tdi without excessive power 112bhp 200 ft/lbs (or is that n/m??) so maybe not so suprising. Our volvo v40 tdi gets 60mpg on a run for comparison.....modern engines eh?
