Spotted a small article in the April 2003 issue of Classic and Sportscar...... One of the themes of this years Villa d'Este Concours Show, being held at Lake Como from April 25 to 27, will be a celebration on 35 years of Guigaro and another theme is the celebration of the Lancia Stratos with cars ranging from the Stratos Zero to Group 4 Rally cars.
How much is a flight to Milan plus a hire car for the weekend and can anyone get into the Concours as a spectator or is it invitation only?

Don't know anything about the show, or the prices of flights and cars (but that info is available on the web). Depends where you want to fly from as well.

But it sounds like it could make for a nice weekend trip.
If more information becomes available, I might consider it (Chris too).

A quick look around for info on travelling to Lako Como threw up the following:

http://www.citalia.co.uk/Italy/LComo/LComo.htm

Citalia aren't likely to be the cheapest, but good for information.
I see from this that there are two airports near to Milan, being Malpensa and Linate. Of course, I've no idea of the geography involved in Italy.

Easyjet fly from Stansted (STN) to Linate (LIN), with prices from about thirty pounds to just ove fifty pounds each way. They do have some flights from Gatwick (LGW) to Linate too. They don't fly from Liverpool (LPL to Linate though, so no luck there Guy.

BMI Baby (yuk, what a lousy name) fly from East Midlands airport (EMA) to Milan Bergamo (BGY) with prices of about £30 out and £40 back.

There is a web site for the Concours event, at:

http://www.concorsodeleganzavilladeste.com/

I can't see anything on there about visitors, only registered entries for the event itself. But I've sent off an email to ask about attending as a spectator. If I get any reply, I'll let you know in here.

Another quick search, only as a price guideline, threw up a price of £81.18 for a 'compact' car rental for three or four days (same price for both, it seems).

This was from the web site
http://www.car-hire-airport.co.uk/car-hire-italy.htm
and specifying car hire from Linate airport.

I won't check any more prices on this stuff, as I think that gives an idea of the cost. Accommodation will be a further cost though.

And I don't suppose you expect to stay at the Villa d'Este yourself, do you? www.villadeste.com

Ken Tomblin rang me last week about this event, and sadly, I can't go as I'm taking Georgina away that week to celebrate our 10th Wedding anniversary.

My original plan was to take her to Venice, but then we decided to go somewhere sunny instead. Damn, Venice would have been within driving distance of Lake Como.

If anyone attends then obviously we want pictures - please.

Andrew.

If I'd stuck to the original plan of going to Venice, then I'm sure I would have. I would love to change plans back again, but, unfortunately, everything is already paid for ..... and I want to live to see my 11th Wedding Anniversary.

Hope some of you get the chance to go out there, and enjoy the atmosphere, and sights.

Personally I'm a bit put off by the black tie requirements and the BMW Sponsorship! Only the very wealthy need apply....
They'll probably set the dogs on you if you dare to mention the word replica!

I have ust received a reply to my email enquiry, as follows:

Dear Mr. Rutter,
The Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este will take place on April 26th and 27th.
It is open to the public on Sunday, April 27th, at Villa Erba (5 minutes from Villa d'Este) where besides the vintage cars, prototypes and concept cars there will be an exhibition of Italdesign/Giugiaro, Rolls-Royce and Lancia Stratos Bertone.
The entry fee is:
Euro 8,00 per person
Euro 15,00 for a family (max 4 persons)
The tickets can be purchased directly at Villa Erba at your arrival.

Best regards,

Elena Pontiggia

There was also an attachment with the agenda for the day, which I'll post as the next reply.

PS
David, can the forum be changed to allow PDF attachments as well as images?
Or might they be too large?

The forum software doesn't support PDF as attachments at present, but I think the new version due out in about 3 months will.

If you email it to me, I'll put it on the website, and create a link to it.

I knew I should have told Georgina it would be guaranteed to be gloriously sunny and hot in Venice in April ..... :( :(

Did anyone decide to go to this?

If anyone goes, perhaps you could upload some pictures of the event on your return.
