Can anyone help? Although I’ve only just ordered my kit from Hawk I’m keen to choose a colour to paint the car (slightly premature?). Does anyone have a list of original factory colour names and codes that the cars were available in? Also what are people’s views on painting the chassis the same colour as the body?
On a different subject, I have vague memories of Jeremy Clarkson driving a lime green Stratos on a Lancia ‘Top Gear’ special. Does anybody know if this is available as on a BBC video?

Cheers,

Andrew.

Andrew,

Welcome to the Forum, and congratulations on becoming a Stratos owner. I hope you enjoy being here, and that it proves beneficial to you during the build of your car. There'll be a lot of completed Hawks at Abingdon for the Stratos UK Motorsport Weekend over the weekend of June 8/9. Maybe we'll see you there?

Do you mean the standard road-going Stratos colours, or colours of the various rally cars?

Regarding painting the chassis, I would think it's a case of whatever makes YOU happy is the correct choice. The most important thing about owning a Stratos is to enjoy it!

I believe the car that Jeremy Clarkson drove belongs to Martin Cliffe at Omicron. I remember him telling me about it, and that Clarkson said it was going to appear on one of his videos, but I don't know whether it ever did.

Sorry, I mean road spec cars. I believe the colours were l. blue, d. blue, red, lime, orange and yellow but I'd like to spray some test cards to get a better idea.
I'll definatly be at Abingdon (it's just down the road), so hopefully I'll be able to have a good look at some cars to get a better idea of what I'm letting myself in for!

Cheers,

Andrew.:)

Andrew,

Can't help with colour codes, but for what it is worth, I have painted my chassis the same colour as the rest of the car, and feel it looks tidier and more like a factory job.

Having said that, I am having nightmares about keeping it clean. My original intention was not to make a really spotless looking car, but at this stage it is has turned out a bit better than originally intended. It isn't on the road yet, so am yet to really find out the diifficulties.

I have posted a photo just after the car was painted. The colour is Lamborghini Fly yellow (giallo).

Ultimately though as said, what you end up doing is up to you, and maybe what you intend to to do with the car. e.g., if you want todo rallying in it, maybe better to have a black chassis.

cheers,

Stewart

Oops,

Photo is too big, I will have to try and resize it and try again later!

sorry,

Thanks Stewart. I believe Fly yellow is one of the original colour and one I'm considering. What colour wheels are you using? My only concern with painting the car yellow is that using a wheel of a similar design to the original compag's with their dull gold finish might look a bit odd (I'm presuming all the original road cars used these wheels).

Andrew.

Andrew,

When I was at the world Stratos Meeting in Rosenburg, Christian Hrabalek had each of his raod cars there

Dark Blue
Green
Yellow
Red

I think I have pictures somewhere of each individual car. I'll try and dig them out so that you can see how each looks with orginal wheels. Probably be later this week before I have time to do that.

Stewart,

Your picture needs to be a maximum of 500 pixels wide. Doesn't matter how long it is.

I set this limit on the forum, so that pictures wouldn't upset the formatting. However, if people find it a problem and would rather I removed it, that's easy to do.

Any colour pictures would be appreciated.

Andrew,

I am having no luck with these photo's I'm afraid.

See if David can offer some helpful suggestions.

As for wheels, I have gone for chrome outer and gold centre. I thought it would look okay even with the yellow... look at the Kyosho kits, but if it doesn't I will be out with the paint brush.

The wheels were ordered last week, but there is a 6 week wait, so it will be awhile before I can post a photo of them on the car. Would you believe it is the gold that is the hold up!

cheers,

Stewart

Andrew, I see there have been quite a few replies to your question but nothing "concrete" thus far, it would seem that all original cars that I have seen have the chassis painted the same colour as the body which does look rather good but there must be somebody out there who has an original brochure with the colour names in it,codes would be even more helpful (especially as I am your local paint sprayer and there is a distinct possibility that I may end up painting it).
Anybody who reads this please try to help.
As for wheels I think it is a case of "If it feels good do it" as we mentioned in our conversation the other day.
Good luck with the build.....must go now as Ive got a Ferrari to mask up.

Cheers
Gareth

I'd swear I've seen the actual color codes somewhere - I'll look through the archive tonight when I get home.

My car is Giallo Fly which is paint code 490.

I compared my car to Andrew Ferguson's yellow original Stratos at Abingdon last year, and the colours were identical.

I am trying to obtain the colour codes for each of the colours of the standard road going Stratos.

I'm still having some problems regarding stradale paint colours. Does anyone know the names of the colours? I need to know these because my man who does my paint work uses Sikkins paints and to get the mixtures he needs to know the name of the colours, i.e. Grigio Scuro for Silver/grey, not just Rosso (red).

Thanks.

Andrew.

I've been in touch with PPG UK and they don't recognise these paint codes???

YEESSSSSSS!!!!!!!, finally success.......we have the colours and I can mix them all, that red really is an awesome colour....better than my 308.
As i suspected the red and the yellow are very transparent....handy when you want to paint your black powder coated chassis red.........looks like I will have to put a ground coat on to start with, the other colours cover very easily.

I remembered that I have a copy of the Stratos parts manual which lists the paint part numbers. In addition to the Italver numbers that Guy supplied there are also corresponding Lancia numbers that might be recognised by a Fiat dealer.

Rosso 86980108
Giallo 86980109
Verde 86980110
Blu 86980111
Azzurro 86980112

The sheet also lists the numbers of the original primers, fillers, cats and thinners etc.

For David really - did you ever have any luck with finding the standard car colour codes??

I thought I'd got it gripped using the Italver PPG codes Guy published way back, but the paint shop rang yesterday and can't get anywhere with the code for the Lime Green I gave thgem. (OK with the Gridgio Scuro).

I searched the CD archive last night and found a code Bob Sharp said he used which was 358/001 Verde Chiaro, but having just found a refence to it on an X 1/9 website, it looks totally wrong. The code 329 looks like Lime while 358 looks almost Forest green.... (actually called Verde Medio).

So, I'm now totally confused and I need a paint code ASAP.

Can anyone help me please?

Thanks!

After buying a 1/4 litre of each Stradale colour I had a sample card sprayed of each from the PPG list without any problem. I'll look at the tins tonight to double check the codes if you like.

Ah, I take it the info from Colin did the trick then...

I just found a website with the PPG America paint chip pages from 1972...and found the colour Bob used - they call it Light Bright Green (which seems about right) and it looks pretty much spot-on.

I'll also pass them the code from Colin's handbook to make sure it matches.

Thanks again.

So, after my late night panic trying to find a code that the paint guy could use, something dawned on me that maybe one of the real history buffs out there can comment on.

The cars were built in the same Bertone plant as the X 1/9 right....so what's the chances they used exactly the same colours to paint them as they were putting on the X 1/9s at the time??? Just a thought....and the answer is probably 'of course they were, stupid'

Chris,
that looks like solid progress. Is the whole shooting match in colour now? Just needs delivering back and assembling?
You must have changed your mind on the colour then- did you not decide on a Kawasaki colour before?

Still lots of paint to go on. Front & rear done, doors & bits probably done by now, tub not touched yet. Maybe, possibly (please...), by the end of the week, but likely later. Still lots to do after it comes back though....

I did briefly toy with the idea of the Norton colour, but only briefly...this is the Fiat colour (which I believe/hope is the same as the original green). Still, it looks good whatever.

So what never seems to get talked about is the FINISH of the Stratos paint. It's clear from descriptions and photographs that the paint (at least the red) is a MATTE finish!

The cars that are painted shiny in the pictures always have a lucious look to them like liquid or a piece of hard candy, but the orange-ish red MATTE finish has a classic -a quite certainly, a unique look.

Has anyone here gone with the matte finish? If so, what color?

Cheers,

eric
