That last one was just too easy so we'll pick something harder this time. The picture below was taken at a post rally display - can you name the rally?

10 views and no-one has come up with the answer yet!
OK, I'll add a bit of extra interest to it.
The first person with the correct answer will receive a Stratos Baseball Cap.
As it is John's Question, his decision on the correct answer is final.

Yeah - this one's really tough. There is a good clue hiding in the picture, but you will probably need to do some research to make use of it.

John,
I'll have a wild stab andsay it was the 1974 RAC, although I have some doubts as the markings on the nose don't match some other photo's.
Still I've started the ball rolling!

I think that there are 2 clues in the picture, and I have it down to 2 possibilities, but can't narrow it down further.
However, thinking about it, John's first Stratos Trivia was probably the additional clue I need.
I'll keep my answer to myself for now, because I want someone else to win this cap.

Stab in the dark (I want a new hat!) - 1975 Monte Carlo:rolleyes:

Those are all good guesses, and some of them are not too far off, but nobody's got it yet. I do know for certain what year & event the picture is from because I got it from the photographer himself.
Here are a few more tid-bits. The car has a wing on the tail (you can just see it in the photo), but not one on the roof. There's something else that is very distinct about the car but you should be critical when you compare it to other photos.
I think that's enough for now. Good Luck.

I'm no expert on the Stratos, but could it be the '74 Safari? Either my eyesight's really bad or there's dust all over all the cars and there can only be a couple of Rallies with dust that colour....

Close again - told you guys this was a hard one. How about some more hints...
The ones you can't quite see are an 'L' and a '7'. I got the picture from the photographer because although I had other pictures of this particular car, I could not find any pictures of it from this particular rally. The car looks much the same as it did in another (more famous) rally but there are a few subtle differences. Here is one of my favorite pics from the other rally.

PS - Hope I'm not making this too easy ;) .

Here we go again....
Could it be the winning car at the 1974 Rideau Lakes rally?

Okay,
I'm not sure that Hamish isn't right, but it looks like a single number on the side of the car ,which makes me think instead that it is the 74 Rallye San Remo with Munari and Mannucci.
If neither that nor Hamish is right then I'll stab at 74 Tour de Corse.
How many tries do we get?
cheers

That's up to John.
By the way, my 2 possibilities have already been mentioned, but I'm not saying who mentioned them.

Now you're getting really really close... but you're not quite there yet. (Did I mention that this one was hard?) I will conceede that the second picture is from a rally that has been mentioned in this thread and it was driven by Munari/Manucci in both events. Even if they had won the event in question though, they would not have scored any points for themselves or Lancia.

PS - I'm already working on the next one... got something special in the works (and not quite this tough).

Okay,
My final guess.
How about the 1974 Press-on-Regardless rally in the USA...but the number on the car was different in that event?
If that isn't it I give in!
cheers

John,
Are both pictures from the same rally?
You mentioned that in the first one there was a rear spoiler, but no roof spoiler. However, looking at the 2nd picture, it does not appear to have a boot spoiler.
AND, I must admit, the points scoring issued has me puzzled.

The rally was the San Remo rally.
The car was reg no L 65176 TO.
The year was 1974 (Still in Marlboro livery) and was the first win after getting homologated.
I think the odd thing about the car was that it had a rear tail spoiler which wasn't fitted to works cars until later on in the Stratos's rally career (1975 I think)

Yeah - Stewart.
This is the only picture I have ever found (and I've been looking) from the 1974 Press-On-Regardless Rally in the USA. The event took place from October 31'st to November 4th. Munari/Manucci were entered more for publicity than anything else since it was conveniently close and they had just won the Rideau Lakes Rally in Canada the week before. Their rally was cut short when a local sherrif disaproved of the speed at which they drove through 'his' town. The story I've heard indicates that he chased them onto a hot stage and the situation eventually got so out of hand that the rally was cancelled because of it. Unfortunatly the Stratos, which had been leading the event, retired before then with rear suspension failure.
Cudos also go to Matt for correctly identifying the car as registration TOL65176 (Written 'L65176 TO' on the front left of the car). Their car number for POR was 64 and for those of you that are tuly obsessed, the chassis number was 1524.
I suspect that the rear wing was tried at this event because they could afford the penalty if it didn't work well (No FIA points would be lost).
The second picture is from Rideau Lakes. I have several good ones from that event including some of a works Beta in Marlboro livery. Please let me know if anybody wants a copy.
John B.
PS - Sorry for not posting this sooner - I've been really busy at work.

John,
Just goes to show if you have enough guesses you have to get it right in the end!
That was interesting though as I was not aware of the full story of the rally. I could have mentioned the race number but as for the chassis...no chance!
I'll look forward to your next challenge.
Many thanks

Congratulations, Stewart.
Your cap will be on the way to you in the next few days.
One condition is that you must bring it to the Stratos UK Motorsport Weekend 2003!! - only kinding, although it would be nice to see you here.

Well, I was wrong, because I had convinced myself it was Corsica 1974.
I knew the registration, and that San Remo and Corsica in 1974 were the only 2 rallies
where that car competed in Marlboro livery,
and there was another Stratos competing not in Marlboro livery.
AND, because I know it didn't have a boot spoiler for the Rideau Lakes 1974, I assumed that it wouldn't have one for San Remo, which was prior to both the Press On Regardless, and the Rideau Lakes.
So that left me the only conclusion, that it had to be Corsica 74.
When you mentioned that the car had not finished the rally, that only re-inforced my conclusion.
So, John, what is the car in the background of the original picture? It's quite difficult to make out, but I thought it was a white Stratos.

David,
I will wear the cap with pride! Thank you very much.
AS for 2003, it is my intention to be back in the UK next year, would have liked it to be this year, but lack of funds.... So, I will be sure to bring it with me. I would love to come for the weekend, the only thing is whether or not the timing is right as I tend to come over in September. I am jealous not being able to participate in Stratos events though.
Just to echo Johns comments about the club, I wholeheartedly support his comment about the value of the club. I think it is extremely valuable and would encourage all owners to join. As an overseas member that should be high recommendation. I have met club members on previous UK trips, and cannot speak highly enough of their support and hospitality. Without the photo's of theircars I would have been in a lot of trouble building. Speaking of which my door trims arrived from the upholsterer yesterday. Progress continues!!
The forum is also wonderful, and I think it is a credit to you David to have got it up and running. It is something that has been needed, and as everyone is finding it is a great way to get answers to tricky questions answered quickly.
The Subaru WRX club over here actually prints the contents of their forum in their newsletter since not everyone wants or is able to participate. It might worth considering at least an edited version in the newsletter perhaps?
Keep up the good work.

Stewart,
I was having a conversation with Mark Chapman, the club's newsletter editor, at the AGM. We discussed whether the Forum would have a negative impact on contributions to the newsletter.
We concluded that Mark would take information from the Forum and reproduce snippets of information into the newsletter, so that those who do not have the benifit of Internet Access could still gain from the Forum.
I personally still intend to try and contribute to the newsletter as much as possible, although I must admit that I will probably find it hard to find things to say which I have not already said either on my website or on the forum.
Anyway, it's nice to hear that you might be coming to the UK, and hopefully, you might be able to meet up with some of us.
Unfortunately, the Stratos UK Motorsport Weekend 2003 will be held in the beginning of June 2003, but once you know your plans more accurately let us know, and maybe someone will be doing a rally, race, hillclimb, or sprint, that you could attend.
I hope to be able to use the website and forum to provide more information about where the various Stratos will be attending displays or competing.
I hope you like the cap when you get it. I'm hoping to put it in the post to you tomorrow (Friday).
