Well guys and gals. I finally removed my old tired V6 from my Corse today, with the help of that nice bloke who goes by the name of Mick.

Actually, to be honest he removed it with my help ( i think) :p :D :p

Anyway, got a LOT of work to do now before I can get the new engine in.

I am hoping to have it all back running and legal before Abingdon, but that is not that far away now.

Many thanks again Mick.

cheers

No problem Tim,

To be honest, I think it was good to keep in practice for when I build my next one.
Don't know when but one day. ;)
Anyhow, it was more fun than going to work. And before you say anything John (strat6v) I have gone in to work today. :D
Good job tomorrow is my half day. :p :p :p

What? Just for a change? :D :D

I've seen more 'work' in one of Jim Royle's sick notes, you should be ashamed of yourself sending Chris out to work while you swan around in ye olde smoking jacket, cigar in one hand, LARGE brandy in't other.

Well, Ive made real progress this week.

Retimed the engine and fitted a new belt after fitting a new water pump, fitted new clutch and gearbox, replaced all the SS braided fuel hose because the rubber inner was breaking up on the original pipes (now replaced with High pressure SS braided), refitted the injectors, fuel rail and plenum, new starter (thanks Matt), middle drive shaft and alternator.

Stripped out the wiring loom and started re-wiring for the new Emerald ECU.

Everything has been cleaned up and repainted where possible.
The Samco should arrive tomorow and that nice man Mick is coming over on Saturday morning to help me get it back in.

More news once the engine is in.

Cheers

Nice one Tim, looking forward to seeing that at Abingdon.
The Emerald problems seem to be ongoing at present, judging from Marks troubles.
Has Mick got the system for the Mazda sorted yet?
It's to be hoped that you don't have the same experience.
All this is a bit embarrassing having sung their praises over the Evo.

Oh yes my boy. :) Well, it's running anyway, needs a bit of tweaking but it's almost there.
At last. :D

The mazdaz wiring and ecu are all in place, bound up, zip tied etc. Engine runs but needs some fine tuning. Sure Mick will let you know. Just got to make off the connections for the tacho, water temp guage and charging warning light.

Yes John,
Forgot to say a huge thank you for all your hard work (and sleepless nights) ;)
I plan to DRIVE it out of the workshop today to give it a wash. I'll post a couple of pics. so you can see what all the hard work has been about.

And here is the end result of all that frustration. And I did drive it out. :D
But I forgot to close the bonnet.

Worth all the effort in the end then Mick!
And what good weather we are having for getting shut of a ragtop!

Just a quick update.

Chris came round on Sunday and we eventually managed to get the engine fired up.

Had a major coolant leak from the water pump, which was down to the gasket moving during installation. seriously cheesed off.
Removed the timing belt and refitted the pump with a new gasket and all is now fine.

I now know that you need to use a spacer on the starter motor

Anyway. got the car booked in for mapping this wednesday, and MOT on Friday.

Many thanks to Chris, as I would have REALLY struggled on my own

Almost there now .....

Tim, glad you got it booked in for Wednesday. Keep us posted on the results, particularly interested in the shape of the power/torque curves as my motor is very similar spec to yours as you know.

In defence of your efforts Tim....only a few minor niggles that were easily sorted. Pretty darn good for someone who hasn't been fiddling with cars since the age of 10, as I have for example....and only one minor wiring fault on the entire ECU loom, so I'd give a good A+ myself ;)

On a general note, one problem that occurred as we were about to fire it up....the fuel pump stopped working. So, having just installed a brand new ECU and done all the wiring, what would you suspect? I checked the relays & fuses for the ECU etc, no feed volts. Tim checked the fuel pump feed fuse in the car, fine. Turned out to be an original in-line connector that hadn't been touched during the installation. Moral, look for the simple stuff!!!

In a very similar veign, once the motor was fired up and running, we couldn't get the IACV to behave. Valve was OK, wiring checked out, blame the ECU???. Nope, blame the idiot operator (me). After not following the advice above and fiddling about swapping the ECU and trying to force a map from a later version ECU into my earlier one (to no avail), quick call to the ECU designer (helps to have friends) and problem solved. Quick tiddle of the starting map supplied and it sat there idling.

Thats great news. Be nice to see what is achievable on the rollers. Is it going to Dave W or elsewhere?

As Tim is very likely at the RR now, I'll take the liberty and answer for him..Storm Developments is where he went. Mostly logistics but also lack of available slots @ Emerald in the short term AFAIK.

I'm dead curious to see how it goes...as I want a copy of that map for mine!! My original plan was to run the car up to Emerald on Motronic, get a power run for reference, remove Motronic & AFM, fit some bigger injectors, swing across to the pre-wired & tested Emerald ECU, map it, compare with 'standard', then couple up the blower and re-map. All very complicated and time consuming.

As things have panned out, I'm starting to think that doing a power run on the Motronic will be pretty pointless as I no longer have a standard spec motor as I'd originally intended. That, and having to swap the injectors etc. at the RR are making me think I should just fit the Emerald once the motor is run in, use Tim's map and recalibrate for the bigger injectors, then toddle over to Emerald at a convenient juncture and get it mapped with the blower plugged up.

It would have been nice to get some sort of figure for what the AFM costs, but the chances of getting any meaningful results given what I've ended up with are slim, and assuming a tweaked version of Tim's map will work for me (which it should), I'd end up wasting a lot of roller time fiddling about swapping parts to no great benefit.

Well, the mapping did not go EXACTLY to plan. spent aprox 1 1/2 - 2 hours on the rollers, but had to abort in the end as the operator could not get a decent fuel reading from the Lambda probe in the tail pipe - something to do with the exhaust design  - was told to get a Lambda probe fitted to the down pipes.

Anyway, car is still a bit eratic to drive as the fuelling is not right yet.
Need to take the car back to Storm or maybe a trip to Emerald is on the cards - just to make sure.

It did pass it's MOT today though :D

Seem to have a slightly worn bottom bush on the drivers side rear hub, where the lower wishbone attaches.

Cheers

Tim

Good news. Just got back from my second visit to Storm Developments and the mapping is now sorted.

Car is running very well now on the Emerald K3 ECU.

Max power gained was 248.4bhp @ 6159rpm
Max torque was 174ft lbs @4872rpm

Not bad for a 12v motor.

The graphs were odd in that they show a dead straight line climbing from 1100rpm to around 4800rpm, then there is a 'messy area' between 4900 and 5400 rpm, then power climbs again to around 6200rpm.

The guys spent about 45 mins to sort this out, but failed to improve on the settings from the 248bhp run. Not sure if this is due to the cam profile or poor fuel delivery. I always thought that the max power for the 12v motor was at 5600rpm, and obviously the C&B fast road cams will change that, but has anyone else seen this kind of graph on a 12v motor?

The guys at Storm think there is a bit more power to be gained, but the fuel system will need to be upgraded first.

I will eventually replace the old Walbro injector pump, fit an adjustable pressure reg and uprated injectors, which should hopefully help, but I'd also like to get a set of TBs for it when finaces have settled down.

Cheers

Tim
