Whilst searching the wilds of ebay for my donor 164 there are a lot of auto super's out there. However don't want an auto obviously, auto lotus elite was a really bad idea (tries to kill you on roundabouts), an auto stratos would be worse. However, if the swapping of the boxes auto to manual is straight forward I could get an auto 164 if needs be and get a box from a breakers or somewhere. More important to me to have the complete car for all the widgets that go with the engine etc and I can boz around for a while til I get the hang of it all.

So, can you swap a manual box onto an auto 164 superdooper 24v engine easily, flywheel + clutch + box and away you go?

Somebody here did this - was it you Chris R?

IIRC there are other complications, possibly the intermediate shaft and its carrier. Not sure so I'll shut up.

I think Chris Richard may have a cautionary tale to tell on this one...
He found it's not straight forward IIRC.

There's lots of late autos around for sale but Roger Donnan did mention there's a big difference and it's only viable if you've already got a manual set up and you were looking just to change the engine!

Yep
Chris will give you the gory details. My engine had been converted before I baught it, but they said that they wouldn't have done it again, took a lot of messing about.
Intermediate shaft and carrier do need changing or altering. ECU also has additional connections if I remember.
Ok if you've got a second engine and box to split or are looking at an aftermarket ECU, but much better to go for Manual donor in the first place if you want all the other bits too.

Yep point taken :o It was a doddle on the elite, prop shalf fits and everything, gear lever through the same hole. Just 101 seized nuts and bolts to contend with, laaavley!

Back to the search then.........

I think the others have said it for me! Yes you can do it, and it's not too difficult - you just don't want to be the first to try it!! You need the transfer shaft carrier-come-engine-mount-come- oil filter mount thingy from a manual. ( you just need to find someone who's cambelt has let go). Use the loom from a manual (preferably pre immobiliser) and you need a manual ECU. Put in the large QV runners and a chip such as Squadratuning ( speak to him first about rev limiter - the engine is good for 7200).

PM me if you need to chat.
