View Full Version : Drive Shaft Fitment

All,

Going to hopefully drop the engine in and do the CVs and drive shafts this weekend.

However... I notice that the drive shafts have a recess at both end to take c-clip, but the inner CV's (from Monte Carlo) don't have anything for this to locate on. Is this right?

For the inner, do I need to push the shaft right through the inner CV and locate with a circlip or not use a circlip and just allow it to float?

Regards

Shaft passes through inner cv then circlip fixes on to stop it pulling off. Inner cv floats itself so shaft fixes in solid on centre piece. If i remember rightly, there is a wire type clip on the outer end of the shaft that fixes in the outer cv

John,

Thanks. Could tell the outers located, Just wasn't 100% sure about what to do with the inners.

Have the wire clips in the kit for the outers. Think I have circlips big enough somewhere for the inners

some shafts have some spacers that slide over the spline, approx 5mm thick. check what you have. Once installed, make sure you have some end float at top and bottom of suspension travel, otherwise you'll have real problems.

John,

I assume these spacers would provide a similar function to any clips on the inner side? Ensuring some float but not allowing the shaft to slip out should an extreme situation happen.

I am fairly happy that the circlips will do in my case. The groove in both ends of the shaft is identical, about 1mm

Thanks for your help

The spacers i have seen just located the joint in a certain place, had no fixing function of any sort. If your cv's go on and the circlip (inner cv) is but up against the cv joint then it should be ok.

The "spacers" are there to keep the wire in the groove while you push the shaft onto the outer CV. Otherwise is't a real bugger to fit them, usually involving brute force!
