View Full Version : Headlight Woes

Ok, Apologies first and foremost because I know headlights and their operations have been done to death at various times in the club magazine etc, but I'm having problems so just thought someone may be able to suggest another remedy.

I have my X19 motors in place, and the drivers side operates perfectly. To get there I have replaced the diodes connected the wires as they should be in the hawk wiring loom diagram and spent hours getting brackets etc into place and linkages moving the right way with the right amount of movement.

I have to say that my brackets/mounts for the headlights are only copies (with diagrams though) of those available from Gerry, so I expected some problems. Still, that isn't this problem.

My problem is that the passenger side light, complete with new diodes and supposedly correct wiring will not stop going up and down if fully connected into the loom. Disconnecting it from the loom, I can get it to go up with direct power, but not come down.

This leads me to assume either that one of my new diodes is faulty or there is some problem in the motor. Any other options anyone?

The fact that my auto electrician is being remarkably unhelpful is not doing me any good at the moment either!

Any suggestions welcomed!

Stewart,

I moved this out of the Buy/Sell Forum, as it's more appropriate in here.

This happens if you connect the motors up as per the hawk loom, you need the alternative wiring which uses a relay on each motor which I wrote up in the owners club mag (some 13yrs ago) I'm sure people will still have a copy of this or a newer equivalent

I had exactly this problem. If I remember correctly, the way the wiring diagram has it, the current is not divirted to ground correctly when the motor is stopped. This allows the motor to 'coast' for a second. It ends up moving past the swithcing point which causes the whole cycle to repeat itself.

I have a nice diagram of the corrected wiring at home. I'll post it later.

Hi Stewart
I can vouch for the relay method, I just used rogers original diagram with a new 12v feed and changeover relays to stop mine at the right point with an earth, and it worked fine. I didn't have the continuous movement problem though, (never do!) mine just stopped at a different place every time.

If you've used the relays, then I think the only other thing could be the diodes. One could be faulty or even mistakenly the wrong way around?

If John B. doesn't manage to post the Diag I can get one put on later

Hope this helps
Cheers

Thanks guys,

David, sorry I put it in the wrong place...realised as soon as I finished, but I had confidence that you would fix it for me!

Roger, I have seen something on the relay option, so need to check with my auto electrician (if he's speaking with me today) and see what he has done, and check though my old club info and see if I can find notes. Shouldn't you be able to get the lights to go up and down with direct battery power though if there is no other problem with the motor/diodes?

John, if you can post the diagram that would be excellent, and Rob I haven't ruled out a faulty diode even though they have just been replaced. I was just delaying another tricky soldering job.

At least the drivers headlight works perfectly, so its only the navigator who's in trouble!

Thanks again

Finally found the diagram but I need to install Visio and do some editing before it will be useful. Working on that now - I'll try to get it up tomorrow.

Unfortunately I am not an inveterate hoarder and do not have a copy of my original diagrams, (have moved house 4 times since originaly building the Transformer as they used to be called), however I'm sure someone like Guy will have a full set going back to the year dot and will be able to post a copy.

I have a copy of the PDF document on x/19 headlights as I had this issue last year with the winking headlights syndrome.

If people want a copy of this document emailed to them please email me and I will forward it on. (its extremely useful !!)

I also purchased a 20 diodes - 10 of the standard variety and 10 of the upgraded version and have all the standard ones left and have 4 of the upgraded ones going spare. I purchased mine from RS Components, the whole lot cost about £6, ordered online and it arrived the next day...how good is that!

Please email me at mattnovat@btopenworld.com - I am in the process of switching over to a new ISP at present.... on the grounds that AOL is crap.

cheers

Hi all,

Thank you for your comments...much appreciated. I hope to have the headlight issue resolved this weekend. (Either that or there'll be a Stratos replica with headlights permanently in the up position!)

Matt, I wouldn't mind a copy of the PDF document on the X19 headlights, but I e.mailed you and it bounced back. Could you e.mail me a copy to stradale74@hotmail.com ?

Many thanks
