Hi all, need some advice.
Finally got a 12v Alfa gearbox, but it is one of the later types with a pull clutch.
My existing gearbox is also from a 12v, but is a push type.
What is the best course of action to get things working.
Do i/ can i change the clutch mechanism inside the bell housing to the older push type or do I have to convert the clutch slave cylinder etc to the newer pull type.
What exactly is involved and does anyone have the spare parts lying around that I can scrounge to make the mods :D
Cheers

On my pull-type setup, the slave cylinder is held into a bracket by a circlip IIRC; the bracket attaches to the bellhousing by 3 bolts. the slave was fairly cheap & easy to come by. I don't know if the two types use the same cylinder - check a parts disc. I would think they probably are the same. If your nerw one came with the whole pull setup, I'd think it easier just to change your hydraulic hose onto the new setup.

Hi Chris, I was given the gearbox with no ancilliary parts at all. I was hoping to use it with the existing push setup, but that is clearly not the case now.
I am hoping that I can scrounge the parts i need pretty quickly.

Can you swap the bellhousings? I can't remember how they go together.

Tim/Chris,
To swap the bellhousing you would have to strip the complete ‘box down. If you want to retain the original clutch you will have to keep the push type mechanism. Are you saying the mounting holes are different on the new gearbox? If so, could you not get a bracket made up to re-position the slave cylinder? Or is the release bearing arm totally different too - I've never seen an Alfa pull type clutch.
Cheers,
Chris

We have a gearbox kicking around up here. I'll have a look and see what it is. I know it's definately a 12V one. Is there any part no etc that I should look for on the box to make sure it's the right one for you?

The original push type clutch has a slave bracket that points inside of the vertical shaft. Inside the bell housing the vertical shaft pushes the clutch.
Later versions have a slave bracket pointing outside the vertical shaft, allowing the pull feature.
You may be able to swap the vertical shaft on the push transaxle and go forward with all existing parts. This is a bit of speculation, because I have not done this myself.
If not, you will need a pull type slave bracket, pull type clutch assembly and appropriate throw out bearing.
Ken
PS
I just checked the parts CD. The bell housing is identicle for the push and pull types. So, it is just a matter of swapping shafts.

The gearbox is the same for pull and push type clutch - you can transfer the slave cylinder/bracket/and realease arm assembly complete from your Push type gearbox

Thanks Roger. Now does anyone have a Push type slave cylinder/bracket/and realease arm assembly spare that i can exchange for beer tokens :D
Id like to keep the other engine and box complete if poss.

Bump - Still wanting to buy a 12v Push type clutch slave cylinder/bracket/and realease arm assembly.
Some one must have these lying around under a bench or attatched to an old gearbox.
Please help.

Think i could furnish thee with required bits, you'll have to check the condition of the slave cylinder seals.
John.

Cheers John. I guess the seals can be obtained from EB Spares.
Please PM me with details and costs etc.

I'll strip the bits of that spare box i have. Bits not really worth a great deal, could swap for a coffee and bun sometime! :)

Cheers John. Was that spare box a 12v with push clutch. I thought you said it was a 24v Clover box.

Didn't realise there was a difference between 12 and 24v boxes. My six speeder has a different case but the clover box looks identical to the 12v i used to have?

Hi John. My understanding is that the 12v and 24v boxes on the 164 use the same case, BUT, later 12v and all 24v boxes use the pull type clutch with a larger clutch plate.
I have a 12v gearbox with a pull type clutch, but want to convert it to push, OR, get the pull type clutch slave cylinder & bracket and a new clutch kit.
Dont mind either way, but I do already have a spare early 12v clutch kit.
Seems daft to get another. However, dont really mind as long as i can get something together soon.
Cheers

Seems they fitted what ever they had in the parts bins, day to day
