All,

Am I right in assuming from other threads that instead of hunting for instruments close to the originals, it would be easier to go for an after market set of instruments.

If so is anyone using an after market set and if so were there any major issues? Would appreciate details of manufacturer.

Iain

Iain, What type of dash are you using, binnacle or GP4? I've got a set of Veglia for the binnacle type, which I no longer require as I've gone down the GP4 route and have used VDO. VDO have the 2 5/8 instruments which are close to the original size!!!

Hi Allen,
Are you intending to go to SVA with the fully installed Group 4 dash? If so what type of switches are you using.
I was thinking to go the Gr 4 dash way also but the switches will be a problem i think ( sticking out too mutch ) :(

Hi Pim, I'm going with the full GP4 dash with these switches (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=002&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=120068949951&rd=1,1). I've sprayed them black though. The trick for SVA is to fit compliant switches on a temporary basis that can be removed without a trace once passed and the pull /push fitted. The other idea is to fit them within the steering wheel "exclusion zone"..

Allen,
do you have a veglia oil temp gauge as you say you have a set of surplus gauges, I'm after one.
Lyndon.

Hi Lyndon, Yes I do have one. I bought it off Colin Artus last year. It's never been used but I have painted the bezel black. I think I paid £25. If you're interested it's yours for £25 plus P&P.

I was thinking the same, to put the temporary swiches in the space where, the oil pressure and voltmeter should originally go, within the sterring wheel.
And after SVA and Dutch RDW, put the pull switches on the right spot in the middle of the dash.
- Would that be a good idea or are there other problems to think of?
- Is a rev counter mandatory?
- Would the sharp edge on top of the Gr 4 dash be a problem?
- Is it ok to fit the Veglia gauges outside the steering wheel diameter?

Sorry for so many questions, but it would save a lot of work to fit the Gr4 dash right away, i think :o

Pim,

You can put the pull switches within the shadow of the steering wheel I believe. I'm going to fit some small friendly rocker switches onto a seperate removeable panel and place it somewhere convenient. Then remove it when I've passed SVA.
When I spoke to Gerry, he mentioned putting the switches where the gauges will eventually go as an option.
I understand an accurate speedo is the only mandatory gauge required.
The top edge of the dash looks to be Ok to me. If there's an issue I'll fit a strip of rubber beeding of it!!
The gauges can be fitted as per the original / outside the steering wheel as they have nice round friendly edges.

My approach is to complete the GP4 dash with gauges etc... the only thing different will be the switches as mentioned above. No trip meters etc as their shapes are not people friendly!!!

The only question I have is to do with the position of the warning lights. I have several with the mechanical VDO pro gauages I'm using and I'm also using a 60mm speedo with no warning lights. Any ideas?

Lyndon,
I'm looking to go to Stoneliegh as well but will know for sure later. Will PM to firm up later.

Iain,
I bought the switches and gauges off Bob Pilott as follows:The prices for
The speedo and r/counter are £16.50 each Shallow bodied type.
The three gauges are £12.50 each
The set of five switches £8.00

I've painted the bezel silk black but may need a touch up depending on your build quality!! As long as I get what I paid plus P&P I'd be happy,
Allen

I've sprayed them black though.

I've seen the same kind of knobs in white with the little red light in the middle, like the Gr4 knobs, on a show in Holland. I could have a look next time if youre interested?? They were 2,50 Euro's a piece! I believe m6 thread it is.

Thet are exactly like this one ( second picture) but then in white.

I also have some black ones which i tried to fit on a modern pull swich. Sadly it did not work out that well :( :o . I had to drill the bakelite this went ok but taping the thread to match the modern pull switch was not a good idea. Some have cracks an some thread is not straight. ( see first pic ). You can have these knobs if you want? I think i have 6 or 7 of these.

I just bought seven switches which have the same black knobs fitted on a pull swich with a hollow stem ( third picture ), at the end of the stem is a small lamp. They are all 3 position switches, but that does not matter i suppose.

Hi Pim,
You've confused me, not hard after a long week! The 3rd pic does not show the black knob end. Does it look similar to the 2nd pic only with a white light and the switch on the right in the 1st pic? Are you saying you have found a supply of these pull switches and you have bought 7?

The first picture shows the modern pull switch on the left on which i tried to fit the black knobs , as shown on the left of that same picture. These knobs i bought a year ago. The same seller has also these knobs in white.

The second and third pic are the switches i bought last week. They already had the same black knobs fitted. These i am going to use in my dash!

So i don't need the swiches i made last year anymore, and i can also try to get the white knobs if someones interested.

Sorry for the confusion, indeed it has been a long heavy week.

Thanks Pim, makes perfect sense now. So the ones bought last week are closer to the originals but have white lights? They're 3 way and in good condition?? I am interested in buying some. How much are they and can you get 7 of them?

Appologies for not being clear, ust be my bad Englisch, or maybe hard week of working outside. Here's the picture of the switches I could miss.
On the left you see the original new ( 2 position ) switch.
In the middle the same switches but then with the old bored out knobs, the original new knobs are above those. Below you see some of the knobs that have cracket :o these need glueing. On the top is a 3 position switch, but without the little red light in the middle!

The white knobs i described are exactly like the ones on the bottom of the picture ( the black is then white / ivory like ), with a little red light! Those i don't have but could try to get them if someones interested  Could take a while though till theres a nexst show.

Hope this clears up things ;)

Cheers
