I know this has been discussed before:

but should the first position of the headlamp stalk (if you count the second as main and the third as dip) be side lights only? (with head and side lamps switched on, on the dash/fascia switch?)

my stalks only had two positions for dip and main. Lights were switched on the dash. Changed to thema staliks to suit my wiper motor now.

I think you can wire them however you like! I did mine so that I had sidelights on with the switch pushed in at the top position. No power through the stalks. With the switch pushed in at the bottom the stalks were powered. Top position gives me dip, middle main and bottom dipped (I think) plus the pod lights. The only load going through the stalks controls the relays for the lights and not the lamp currents. They won't last long if you wire them without relays!

It's ok Guy, I've got relays!
I'll have to decide what option to take for the third position on the stalk (the one that isn't dip or main).

Mine are side lights IIRC - haven't seen the car all winter. I reckon this is rather dangerous as it's all too easy to accidentally knock the headlamps off and side lights are pretty useless.
