I have a set of Veglia instruments but have not been able to find a Voltmeter. If anyone has an instrument for sale or knows of where I could get hold of one it would be handy while the dash is out. :o

I've just read Guy's idea of how to make a Veglia Amps guage from a non original Amps guage and parts from spare original looking/style Veglia guage.
I've just noticed (ANORAK WARNING) that the original Amps guage is the only one of the 5 small guages to have 'VEGLIA BORLETTI' written behind the needle. All the others have it written at the bottom of the guage.
The thing is, if you make up a 'replica' Amps guage and it has the maker's name at the bottom it would actually be more in uniform with the other small guages. In a way, it would be more uniform and look less out of place than the one fitted to a genuine car?
I had planned to fit a Veglia clock instead as most people do, but I could possibly make a 'Guy replica' Amps guage. I hadn't thought about it before. Another decision? Another job to do.

Hi Guy, what is letraset?
I have a 40 amp ammeter but I reccolect some saying they can't cope with the high amps from the Alfa 164's generator?
Thats why i bought this Richfield Ammeter that looks much like the Veglia, what do you think, it goos up to 60 Amps??

Hi Guy, what is letraset?
Pim,
Letraset is obsolete transfer lettering. It's what Graphic Designers used to use before the Apple Macintosh and design software for print purposes.
It was a sheet of clear(ish) plastic with lots of (depending on point size) thin transfer letters on the back that you could rub down onto paper/card, or in this case Veglia guage backgrounds! It hasn't been used much in the reprographic industry since the late 1980s.
I could work the proper graphics up for the Veglia Ampere guage on the Mac?
I've got some self adhesive that you can print toner onto.

Letraset is/was a form of adhesive lettering. Used tio be used for making title pages for essays etc. in the days of typewriters; the sort of thing we now do on a PC without thinking. i don't know if they still make the simple lettering sheets any more. letraset (http://www.letraset.com/technical.asp)

Thanks both Chrisses, learning every day.
I have a friend who will be making the faces by computer and print them on adhesive paper. Not for the Stradale dash but the Group 4 dash gauges.
I collected some gauges via E bay wich I think come close to the real ones ( see picture ), just have to adjust the faces and the bezels. The ammeter will be mounted upsid down and the voltmeter will get the Veglis surround like the fuel gauges has.
Is it easy to get the needles of or are they better left alone?? And is there a safe way to remove the bezels or is it better to buy tne new ones that are on E bay regularly?
Still thinking about the small speedo, saw this analog electric speedo ( second pic ), but its only 48mm and has a digital trip display. Any opinions?

I wouldn't personally! It wouldn't feel right to go to the trouble of making the other guages look original, then stick in a digital display. IMHO!

I think the needles are best left alone. It's so easy to damage them?

Thanks everyone for some useful tips. I think I'll take up Guys suggestion to modify the ones on ebay, and to make it look as authentic as possible. In the meantime I am still looking for an original Veglia.

It's easy if you are cannibalising another gauge for the bezel and inner surround. Just snip the needle off below the pivot and glue it over the new gauge. if the original needle is smaller it can be left underneath or shortened as necessary.
Pimms, I'd use the 60 Amp Ammeter given the choice.

Hi Geraint,
Just saw Steve's thread on the forum, he has a 30 amp ammeter, if its of any use to you you can have the one i have for spare ( see above picture ), still needs modification, comes from an Alfa Romeo I think.

I've just seen Steve's replica Amps. guage too.
Both the maker's name at the bottom and the English wording in yellow at the top are not actually authentic, but look more authentic because it makes the guage more uniform with the other 4 guages.
I do wonder if every single Stradale that left the factory had exactly the same faces on all the guages?

Hi Chris
You are quite right, I tried to make the guages look like a matched set. This was more important to me than having them looking authentic. I even made LANCIA stickers to put over the FIAT on the rev counter and speedo, yet another departure.
The hardest part of matching the faces was matching the font and size.
In my opinion the odd one out is the Oil Temp guage, this was sourced from Gerry many years ago.
regards
Steve

I got an e-mail from someone called Bruce asking about the Richfield ammeter. Tried to reply but message was not delivered. So maybe you will read the forum again, i bought the ammeter on E-bay, just typed in ammeter (forgot the sellers name, sorry). Good luck searching.
