View Full Version : Okay... how much for a Hawk?

I've loved these cars ever since seeing them as a kid in the seventies, and I'm now in a position where I just might be able to afford one :D

I've looked around these forums and also the Hawk site and the question I just want answering is... how much is one?

I just want a road-use (no track use) version, decently finished inside (not fussed about the lack of sound proofing, etc, but do want it to look 'finished' inside), and as for the power plant... I'm assuming the 2 litre version would be the cheapest and probably provide more than enough 'go' for me, but I'm open to advice here as to which engine option to go for. Reliability is fairly important to me if that affects things.

Finally, as I don't have a garage, I doubt if I can build it myself, so my interest is in a pre-built one.

So... how much do I need to save?

Thanks folks,
Dave.

Where are you located?

Ready built, £10k upwards
Budget to build, £20k upwards
Ballpark guesstimates. I'm not opening the Visa statements or letters from the bank for a year or two, and I refuse to keep all the receipts in one place, in case I see them.

P.S. See Omicron's post in the "buy and sell" bit. Sounds interesting.

Sorry, I'm in the UK.

I'm a bit confused - 10k for a ready built one but 20k to build one?

Oddly enough, that's about right. For about 10k upwards, you do occasionally see complete, secondhand replica cars for sale. These will usually be older kits equipped with "standard" running gear - i.e., Beta engine and brakes. You can sometimes find unfinished kits for less.

I personally have seen used Hawks for as low as 7000 Pounds, but these are few and far between. 10-15k seems a little more normal. Cars on the low end will usually need some work, with well maintained, higher spec cars selling close to the price of a new kit.

The 20k price for a new kit is a very rough estimate, but about in the middle of what you can expect to spend. If you build a Beta engined car to a fairly low spec, it could be less. An Alfa engined car with big brakes and all the right details will probably be more. There's really no limit to how high the price can go - it all depends on how you want to finish the car.

New, professionally built cars can be had, but I'm not sure who's in the business of building them right now. Prices on those will probably be 30k upwards, but I never had anyone quote me, so that figure is probably off.

If you want a detailed breakdown of build costs, check out the thread titled "Build Costs Summary for my Stratos"- better yet, try this link:

http://www.stratossupersite.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=304

I posted a fairly comprehensive list of the costs for my ongoing build. It's for a fairly mild 3-litre build, intended primarily for road use. Bear in mind that my costs are a couple of years old now, and in US dollars, but it's still pretty close to the going rate, give or take.

cheers,

I think that if you were building a new kit, there would be very little difference in price between a Beta-engined example and an Alfa-engined example.

A few years ago, the Alfa-engined cars were much more expensive to build, but with the price of Alfa donors nowadays, it might actually be cheaper to build an Alfa version. (..at least in the UK)

The price to build vs resale value is a common feature of all kit cars, not just Stratos kits. They all cost more to build than you can sell them for once completed ... unless you are exceptionally good at obtain parts for free or next to nothing.

I looked for 2 years trying to find a part finished project - I was just at the stage of discussing a new kit with Gerry when one came up - which I snapped up immediately.

It was a Beta powered kit with 4 stud hubs, I have converted it to V6 powerplant, Leda adjustable rear suspension to match the adjustable fronts and also converted to 5 stud hubs and Alfa 164 brakes.

I either pay cash or deliberately misplace the reciepts - if I looked at what I spend, I might start thinking too much.

Anyway - you can't take it with you as they say!!

I got good service from these folk, so I thought I’d post some bits from their price list – bits needed for a Hawk kit.

Welcome Dave
I have recently purchased an Allora replica for £7000 Fully built MOT & taxed and i was'nt even looking for one having previously decided they were beyond my finacial reach. It will benefit from some work but is more than useable. At present it is only a 1800 Beta but came with a spare 2L + twin 40 DCNF on manifold.
I believe in the saying all things come to he or she that waits. Keep your eyes and ears open and somthing will turn up in your price range.
I still check my garage every night just to make sure i am not dreaming. Give me a couple of years and it will be out on the stages being used as it was intended.
Happy hunting. It is really worth the wait.

What do you mean - couple of years. We're expecting to see you at Abingdon in June, hopefully competing.:)

Ok David, will i start with the excuses now or wait till nearer the event!
Seriously we will be at Abingdon hopfully with the Allora and to take part in the sprint. There is too much work to be done for the stages and to little time. We have both already booked that week for annual leave.
My list of desirable upgrades is getting larger by the week. First i need to enlarge my trailer to take the stratos. I made it to fit up the side of my house so i will need to widen it by adout nine inches or so.
I intend sticking with a Beta unit for a year or two but need a power hike anybody with Beta tunning bits for sale i am on the look out, ie good head and cams.
