Hi all,

Some questions about brake and clutch master cilinders:
* Bought some Tilton brake master cilinders with these residual pressure valves on them. What are they for and do i need them :confused:
* There are two connecting points on the master cilinders, one on the front and one on top. Can i use them both or is the top one only for bleeding :confused:
* Has anyone used a Tilton master cilinder instead of the Alfa 164 master cilinder, if so which size should it be :confused:

I'm sure there will be somebody along who can give a complete answer.

As I understand it, a residual pressure valve leaves some pressure in the brake line so that pads stay closer to the discs. You do not need to push the pedal so far before braking starts. I would not want these for road use.

Residual pressure valves as quoted in Rallydesigns catalogue.

These inline pressure valves maintain a minimum brake line pressure to help eliminate excessive pedal travel.
The two pound valve is used in disc applications where the master cylinder is mounted below the horizontal plane of the calipers and fluid drain back occurs from gravity and vibration, thereby causing excessive caliper piston retraction and a longer brake pedal stroke.

Conclusion is if your master cylinder is higher than the calipers then they aren't needed. (perhaps used in a single seater before?)
