164 Gearbox ratios

I want to shorten the ratios on my 164 12V gearbox, the only modification I am being told about is to get a 164 2.0 T/S gearbox and swap all the gears and axle unit into the casing of a 3.0 and that does change the ratios but nobody can tell me what the real difference is in gearbox performance.

Anybody got any info ?
