I'm having problems equalising both rear handbrake calipers on my car.

How is the fine adjustment made on rear handbrake calipers?

Winding the pistons in and out can only be done in turns of 180 degrees which is a lot of movement on the helix thread of the plunger.

Is the mechanical part self adjusted (by fine amounts) by the action of the hydraulic part of the braking system? At the moment, I've only dealing with the mechanical parts, the hydraulics are not plumbed in yet.

One side of the hand brake works before the other. Winding the piston out on the side that doesn't work, makes the pads far too tight on the disc. In fact it is too tight to make it possible to assemble.

Any thoughts??

Hi Chris
I just wound mine right back in. And that was it. :)
I let the Hydraulics do the rest. There is probably a procedure to do it, but it seems to have coped fine on it's own.?? Once you have it plumbed up and give it a few pumps it should take up the remainder of any play and the cable should then be to pull equally on both sides.

Hello Chris,
I found that my rear Lancia Beta calipers were not self adjusting properly, when I unwound the piston half a turn it moved too far, I then had to wind it in several turns to get back to near were I started from! (This caused a leak due to wear?) With the new reconditioned caliper I used a spacer to make sure not to go too far, then I only had to wind the piston back into alignment. Things seem to be working very well now.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Andrew/Rob

Actually I have already had some helpful advice on this. It IS the hydraulic action that sorts it all out, as Rob describes.

I'll leave them alone until I get the hydraulic side plumbed in. I'm hoping they'll be ok condition wise Andrew, as they are recon units. I can see how it would mess things up though if the part between the piston and plunger rod didn't spin?
