Hi,

I am new to this forum and I have just discovered Hawk cars and the possibility to buy a replica of one of the best rally car of all time, the Stratos.

Maybe some of you guys know the approximate cost of putting together a replica. I know it will differs depending on engine and the amount of different extra equipment. If I make two example, the cheapest car and the car with everything.

First example is a HF2000 where I try to reduced costs by using an used engine, buying used parts etc.

Second example is a HF3000 with an almost new engine, all the gr.4 kit and so on.

Stefan

Hi Stefan and welcome to the forum.
As well as Hawk, you should take a look at Napier too. They also manufacture a Stratos kit www.superstratos.com
Thats what I built last year and apart from the engine and 'box (3 litre V6 Alfa) I used all new parts. Finished build cost was just under £22000.
Pictures of my car are in the gallery under my user name.
Best of luck. :)

Stefan,

Here's an older thread that covers your two scenarios: Cheapest possible car and a new kit with everything:

http://www.stratossupersite.com/forum/showthread.php?t=304

Bear in mind that the figures are 5 years old, and are in 2001 USD. Divide dollars by about 1.5 to get the totals in Pounds. Prices for new kits are about 2000 Pounds more expensive now.

My kit doesn't really have "everything". You can always spend more if you try - 4 pot brakes, racing fuel cells, forced induction, kevlar body work, etc. I think the upper limit is really what you are willing to spend.

I should also point out that the "coffin spoke replica wheels" I have on my cost breakdown are the 3-piece Image wheels shown in the thread, not the cast Campagnolo replicas available through Hawk cars. The Campagnolo replicas are about twice as expensive as the price given for the Image wheels.

Hi Stefan,
There's loads of threads covering costs etc.... I'm one of the newbies. I started building earlier this year with a budget of sorts. Once you begin building, what's a budget for? Breaking?
There are 2 kits available and a cost mentally as well as monetary. My ideas was to aim high as you'll only be revisiting the car if you don't do it right 1st time.
The build is a worth while challenge and I've never enjoyed myself so much... nearly as good as lego!
The guys in the club and on the forum provide excellent support so good luck.

Thank you guys!

I will sit down and make calculations regarding costs. As you can assume by looking at my username I own an integrale. That is also a car you can spend money trying to keep in good condition.

I was in Turin for the centenary celebration and it was the first time I observed a Stratos in real life. It was also in Turin that I found out about Hawk cars.

I don't think there exists any Stratos car in Sweden or in the rest of Scandinavia.

I will also allocate some time to read earlier post in this forum. I think that can be a good start.

Best regards from Sweden
Stefan

Hello Stephan

I've got a Stratos/Hawk and live in Sweden:-) (near Gothenburg)
You’re most welcome to see my car If you want to.

My car will have a No Limit approach in building or rather:
Do it right, or don’t do it at all.
FIRST comes choosing the correct part, and THEN, and only then, price will be considered.

That meaning, I use the Hawk Campagnolo replicas, biggest possible brakes from Brembo, new everything except obvious Stratos parts.
Almost new GTA engine (~10km on odo) (possible twin respirator later), special built Bilstein dampers with most recent modern technologies, modern ECU with possible use of traction ctrl and so on.

Still I opt for a car looking essentially a clone to the real thing (respect to Lancia/Bertone) meaning using tons of expensive and almost obsolete parts;
instruments, lights, seats, handles, 15” wheels, 80ies stance etc…

I think my car will cost a minimum of 400 000 SEK (£28 000), or even breaking the 500 000 barrier. (£35 000).
That despite the fact I have my own racing business and tons of stuff, (and race car knowledge) on the shelf’s as well as good “business connections”.

But so what? I will have a car so much more rewarding than lets say the Volvo XC90, Audi TT, BMW or whatever and still it will cost less. Also costs will be spread out over approx three years.
The cost savings of my daily driver (V 740) compared to almost any other new car covers, if not all but most, of my Stratos expenses. Make the math.

On the other hand you can build this car a lot cheaper using 12V alfa parts from an 80ies donor etc but this car will never be cheap to build anyway.
Using a cheap engine is sensible because one can always upgrade later. Same with wheels.
Using cheap and or un-restored brakes, drive-shafts, switches, instruments etc etc will keep costs down but you will never upgrade all of those parts.
The downside of building cheap in this car, I believe will have much more drawbacks and disadvantages than most other cars/kits.

I’m not saying that everyone should do as I with this No Limit approach but I strongly emphasise: build this car right first or you will be regretting yourself.

Not forgetting the boot lock, Luigi !!
