All,

Here is the list of assumptions that we used for the "under $20,000" Stratos build. Again, prices are in 2001 USD.

For the case of the White HF2000 I was
considering (Formerly Chris Pollard's car), that breaks down to:

Used Car, less engine: $10,700 (Approx. 7000 pounds at the time)
Overseas shippng:$2000
Customs, Dock Fees, Import Duty, Domestic Shipping:$1275
Alfa 164 v-6, tranny, ecu :$2000

Subtotal: $15,975.

Then we added the following parts from Hawk Cars to complete the conversion to LHD / Alfa power:

a second fuel tank: $243
Beta to Alfa conversion kit:$800
Alfa Shift Linkage kit: $300
LHD Steering Rack: $280
New Dash:$400

Total:$17,998

So, Allowing for a little exhaust work, and assorted expenses for finishing the interior and such, you could put together a v-6 powered Stradale, using Beta brakes and 4-lug wheels, for under $20,000... theoretically

This car has since been sold to Chris Richard, so he may be able to update the costs based on his experience, and let me know how full of s*** my estimate was!;)

The only problem with this assumption is that converting to LHD is not a simple case of changing the steering rack and dash.

Because the hawk has an offset central member in the chassis in order to reduce the offset on the pedals, so if you used a RHD chassis you would have problems unless you went for a major rework on the chassis which would not be practical.

Roger,

No argument there! The low-cost option does nothing to correct this condition, so the result may be a slightly awkward seating position. It also requires a little welding to relocate mounting brackets for the steering column and master cylinders.

I only said it would be cheap. I didn't promise it would be easy (or perfect) ;)

John Brewer is in the process of converting his car from right to left hand drive, and is leaving the center spine untouched. He's going to modify his fiberglass center console to partially compensate, but acknowledges that he'll still be short a little flailing room.

Even proper Left hand drive cars from Hawk cars seem to suffer a bit in this regard. There's more space in the footwell, but the handbrake bracket is still located on the left side of the spine. The fiberglass console appears to be the same as the one used in the right hand drive car, so when it's all put together, the console crowds the seat mounting and belt installation for the driver's side. Plenty of room on the passenger's side though.

"John Brewer is in the process of converting his car from right to left hand drive"

I hope hes got small feet! (space for pedals will be tight)

That's one of the reasons I opted for a new, factory LHD car. John says he can get his feet in there, but there's no way I could. My feet barely fit in my car - racing shoes will be a must if I don't want to drive in my stocking feet! :D

Cheers,

Thats the first time I've seen an accrurate breakdown of costs and it makes very interesting reading. Thanks for the effort.
It compares surprising closely to my Corse I 24V, which has cost me 35,000 Euro (= $) but not including transport, shipping etc.
That is almost all new parts apart from a nearly-new Alfa motor and some minor parts from my old GpA Citroen AX donor rally car.
I wont bother to publish my list which come to over 455 items!

Can you enlarge a bit more on the wheels i.e.
where do you get them from ?
are they group 4 rear ?
what are the exact sizes and offsets ?
are they split rim or one piece ?

Thanks

Phil......errr sorry Bernard !

Omicron's website says they're going to remanufacture these, but it's said that for a while. Any progress Andrew?

The wheels I'm planning on using are manufactured by Image Wheels. As far as I know, they're exclusive to Hawk Cars, since I've never seen them on Image's website.

They're definitely split rim, I think 3-piece. They are available in whatever widths that Image can make, I suppose. Jeff Davison ordered a set with his Gp.4 car, so I know for sure thay can be had in that size. I'm pretty sure they're 15 inch, but I could be wrong. They might be 16 inch.

Price was something around 250 Pounds each last time I asked Gerry about them. I think they're only available in 5-lug.

I've attached a picture of one of Jeff's wheels
