Stratos
April 25th, 2002, 06:05 AM
Over the Bank Holiday weekend of 25/26th August 2001, we held the first Stratos UK Motorsport Weekend at Abingdon. The event was hugely successfull with 26 cars attending over the course of the 2 days, and lots of action in both the SPRINT and the RALLY.
This year we are doing it once again over the weekend of 8/9th June 2002, and we are hoping that it will be bigger and better still. If you own a Stratos, or Stratos Replica, or even if you are just a Stratos enthusiast, you MUST attend this event.
The weekend will co-incide with the ABINGDON Motorsport CARNIVAL Weekend, being organised at the same venue jointly by Sutton and Cheam Motor Club and Farnborough and District Motor Club. The two clubs have kindly agreed to allocate a prominent display area to the Stratos Meeting.
On Saturday 8th June, there will be a National B Status SPRINT, and a National B Status Autotest. The requirements for competing in the SPRINT on the Saturday are fairly easy to achieve, and the course is not very demanding on the car, so many STRATOS owners may wish to take part in this on the Saturday.
Those who attended last year will agree that the course is not demanding on the car, and many of those watching last year felt they would like to compete this year, There are plenty of you who have competed in sprints and hillclimbs, or trackdays, before - so get you car out there, and have a go. If you are going to compete, please let me know as soon as possible so that I can arrange to have an entry form sent out to you.
There will be a special award presented to every Stratos which competes in the SPRINT. There will also be major awards for the winner and two runner-ups to keep. Additionally, The Stratos Sprint Trophy will be presented to the winner of the Abingdon Carnival Sprint, and will be engraved with their name, and be held for a period of 12 months.
Last year's winner Gary Lomas will be back again to defend his title, but there is stiff competition lining up from several other Stratos owners. Check out the current list of probable competitors to see who should be taking part.
Action on Sunday 9th June, will consist of a 95mile National B Status TARMAC RALLY, split into 12 competitive stages, so there will be continuous action throughout the day. There is excellent viewing of all the action, and the Stratos display area is right next to the rally service area, so you have an opportunity to be involved in the thick of the action.
Gary Lomas was victorious in the Rally last year, and again, he's coming back to defend his crown. Make sure you come along to see if he can hold off his competitors and take a second rally victory!!!
The whole weekend will be covered by a professional video crew, and copies of the video will be available after the event. We learnt a lot from producing the video of last year's event, and will ensure that this year's video is even better still. Copies of last year's video are still available - click here for more details.
We are trying to make this the biggest and best UK Stratos Gathering ever, so get your Stratos along there, and help make it happen.
Please contact David Watson, as soon as possible, to register your interest in attending and/or competing. We have a group booking at special rates at the Oxford Spires Hotel, so let us know if you will need accommodation and we will make arrangements for this. Either contact David direct via phone, fax, or email, or you can post the enclosed form directly to David. All contact details are on the website.
