View Full Version : If there'd never been a Stratos ........
Stratos

If there'd never been a Stratos, what would be your favourite car?
I'm quite sure that a number of us will probably quite a number and will have difficulty choosing just one.
My favourite would be the Lancia 037 Rallye - the Lancia's first Group B rally car.
I'm sure I could easily come up with a list of at least 20 cars that I would love to have, but my top 5 cars, AFTER the Stratos are:-
1. Lancia 037
2. Metro 6R4
3. Alpine Renault A110
4. Porsche 911
5. Ferrari 348

Hmmm, in no particular order:-
Renault 5 Turbo 2
Ford RS200
Audi Sport Quattro (preferably with Michelle Mouton as an optional accessory)
But at number one would be the Stratos, but then again, would I want a real one? I'd never dare to drive it to it's potential; that's the advantage of a replica, you can fix them and not feel guilty about it.

I guess we all like the same things - these would have been the next three on my list. In fact, when I was thinking of my top five I nearly included these.

I would love an original, but no way would I drive like I drive my replica!! That's the beauty of the replica - the looks without the cost!

I hope Santa brings me my wishlist but I'm going to need a big stocking!
Ferrari 250 GTO (still the only Ferrari I've been in!)
Lancia Aurelia B24 Spider
Maserati Kyalami
Jaguar C Type
and top of the list
Aston Martin DB4GT Zagato
But I reserve the right to change this list next year!

Well,
Can't help but put my two cents (pence) worth in here. There is a not surprising (rally) thread to some of those favourite cars.
After the Stratos some of my all time favourites would be:
1) Lamborghini Miura (Definitely sex on wheels)
2) Ferrari 250 GTO
3) 1973 Porsche 911 RSR
4) Maserati Bora
5) Nissan Skyline R32 GTR V spec
I could come up with a good few more too!
If I had a real Stratos I'd probably drive it as hard as I'm going to drive my replica since I have poured far to much money into it and will treating it very tenderly! I'm going to be a wimp for awhile but hopefully once the 'pocket pain' wears off I'll drive the replica harder than I would a genuine car.
cheers

If there had never been a Stratos, I think my favourites would be roughly in this order;
1, Aston Martin Vantage 1995. (not DB7 version)
genuine British muscle car.
2, TVR Griffiths 500.
genuine British muscle car on a budget!
3, Subaru Impreza (Prodrive)
value for money car with everything (except interior)
4, Lancia Delta Intergrale
one of the best road going rally cars albeit dodgy electrics
5, Audi Quattro Turbo.
The Original
This list is just my personal choice, none of the cars are perfect by any means but each has something a bit special - especially the first two and their glorious V8 sound.
Sigh, one day my ticket will come in!!:(

No Laughing
All in rally prepared state and in no order
Manta 400
Chevette HSR
TR7 V8
6R4
20 valve Quattro
I should add my old Rover SD1 3500 for all the fun it provided in the forrests
Stratos remains all time dream car. Cant wait to take on the stages.

Or is it? A post the other day noted the sale of an original for £34,000. If you built a replica, with Ferrari engine, you'd have spent that amount at least.

Top 5, hey?
Is this for driving or looking at? Anyway, here's some of both kinds:
1. Lamborghini Muira
2. Ferrari 308 GTB (carbs.)
3. Bugatti Type 35B
4. Lotus Elise Mk 1
5. Ferrari 308 GT4 (I've just bought one, I thought it was it nearest thing to a Stratos, apart from a Stratos replica.

2. Ford GT40 Mk.III
3. Ferrari 288 GTO
4. Jaguar XJ13
5. 1967 Corvette L88 Coupe

One of each please santa,
you guys have all got good taste.......
If God hadn't created the Stratos I think I'd like:
an RS200 or Intergrale to Rally,
a 250 GTO to pose in,
or a GT40 / D type Jag for runs to Le Mans.......
Thank goodness for Lancia and Mr Hawkridge!

Got to change my top 5, and kick out the Ferari348, and replace it with a Noble M12 GTO - I'd forgot about it.

Nothing wrong with the Mk1 Cortina - it's an established classic. Wouldn't mind having one myself for historuc rallying.
Actually, my first car was a Morris Minor, and I wouldn't mind getting one of those. Mine was 1959, with split windscreem and opposing wipers, AND a starting handle for when the battery went flat - aahh, memories................

When are you off to Cyprus? and where are you staying?
Panos has his Stratos out in Cyprus now. He's based in Nicosia, but I'm sure he'd love to see you while you are across there.
I have a friend, Leonidas, in Pafos, who has an Integrale which he rallies.
I hope to be back out there over the Easter period.

If you have a hire car, and you get a bit of time, drive up to Pafos town at the top of the hill. At the Traffic lights by the Police station, turn right and go about quarter mile along the road, and there will be a car showroom on the right called LEOS CARS.
Go inside and ask to speak to Leo, and wish him Happy New Year for me.
By the way, make sure you take warm clothes for the evenings. It'll be OK during the day, but evenings can get very cold.
Enjoy yourself.

308 GT4 in third?, you're a star Mr. Ghibli!
Oh and Bernard?, ...Del Boy's is a Regal Supervan, not a Robin. They always call it a Robin though, don't they?
Why do I know too much about some things (names of three wheelers) and not enough about others (engineering, computer technology, or something else useful)?
