I'd be interested to know what engine options have been fitted ? Aside from Beta/Alfa etc, has anyone tried any others with any success? Something around the 180-200hp figure?

The hawk/Transformer is in it's 21st year.... The engine options offered over that period are as follows (and it's probably not exhaustive!):-
Lancia Beta
1300
1400
1600
1800
2000
2000 injection
2000 Volumex
Lancia Thema
2000 injection
2000 Turbo
8.32 V8
Alfa Romeo
3.0 12v
3.0 24v
3.2 24v GTA
2.5 V6
Honda/Rover
2.5 V6
2.7 V6
3.2 V6 (?)
Ferrari
2.0 V6 Dino
2.4 V6 Dino
3.0 V8
3.2 V8
I'm sure that others have found their way into the cars over the years but I would guess that the most popular are the normally aspirated Beta range, possibly supplanted by the Alfa range with Ferrari options bring up the rear!
Most can be tuned to produce 180-200bhp but I'd suggest that the Alfa engines are the best value for money. Start with a base 12v 3.0 V6 and you will be looking at 200bhp in untuned (reliable) state.
Well, I'm looking forward to additions to the list!

You can add my (amittedly short-lived) Alfa Romeo 2.0 12V V6 Turbo to the list.

You can also add Nissan Maxima/Cefiro 3L V6..VQ30DE. Pretty much the same power/torque figures as the Alfa from memory.

Wow........It never fails to amaze me the wealth of information available on this forum. I didn't realise the list was so extensive or diverse! I was thinking......it might be worth keeping this on a database with contact names etc for the people who have gone through the 'pain' of a conversion and can perhaps offer advice to those considering their options? I'd be willing to help out with this if anyone else thinks this would be worthwhile.
What's the view on the Alfa engine. I know it's low cost and readily available.....but my brother is currently suffering his 2nd slipped cam-belt in less than two years. Also, having looked at what's involved in working on this engine, it doesn't seem to be the most user friendly power plant? Have we just been unlucky? I can't help thinking Japanese for my own car.........

Tim,
I hear 250 bhp is easily obtainable from the new GM 3.0 litre diesel V6's!

There has been a golf tdi rally car knocking about(no pun intended!!) for quite some time, with around 200 bhp :D I think the economy wasn't quite as good though.
Sando mentioned he might be getting over 30mpg with his kappa motor, he only uses fifth gear these days and slots it in neutral on every down hill bit he comes across. :D :D

OK, TD164s are nasty, rattly, smokey 1980s power units. But if a diesel can win at Le Mans and I'm paying a fortune for petrol...

Does anyone know how these different drive trains compare in spec to the Dino unit ie weight, angle of the vee etc? The Alfa seems the most popular - is it similar weight to the Ferrari drivetrain - and therefore provides an experience close to the real stratos?

A real stratos has the gearbox sitting under the engine with the final drive behind the block. As far as I am aware no other engine/gearbox combination has this arrangement.
Not sure about the weights I am afraid.
Tryphon may be able to supply the weight for as installed stratos engine

Maybe Ferrari Mondial and 308 are a similar set up??

Only one springs to mind......anyone fancy dropping a Mini unit in? (And to think I sold mine to buy an Alpha motor).

Isn't a Mini gearbox in the engine sump?
Arthur

Guy,
It IS the engine sump. I used to believe it's purpose was to grind the stuff that fell down into a harmless paste, easily removed at engine-rebuild time.

Hmmmmmmm............what about Nissan Pulsar engine....been offered an engine and box for very little money. Lightweight four cylinder, 220hp standard with Japanese reliabilty? Can't be bad can it? Whack it onto a Primera FWD box and you're away! (If only it were that simple)
Would be interesting though............
