Putting fans on my oil cooler. Best way to switch it thermostatically? Is there an external sensor available that doesn't require puncturing anything?

Hi Chris
Could it be stuck to the outside of the sump with something like Areldite or epoxy metal repair? Both can easliy stand 100 deg.
Alternatively get a T adapter on the O-P switch or temp sender and use a proper oil/water thermo switch to a relay. (something like a beta high water temp warning switch?)
When I had the Vx I was thinking of doing what Chris smith and Phil do with their engine bay fans and link the Oil Cooler fan(s) to the rad fan switch, again to a relay. No good for me now, but with the old rad they were on and off more often.
cheers

My theory - and you are welcome to ignore it!
Water temperature and oil temperature are intimately connected - if the engine is running 'hot' both oil and water temperatures will rise together at approximately the same rates.
So why not switch your oil cooling fans with the same thermo switch that switches on (one of) the water radiator cooling fan? On my 164 there are two switching points; one at 70 degrees (I believe) when one fan comes on, the other at 90 degrees when the second fan comes on. So you should have a choice of two water temps (I would suggest 90) to switch on the oil cooling fans.
So just one wire from the the appropriate water cooling fan relay to the new relay controlling the oil cooling radiator fan will do the job!
KISS is the theory - "keep it simple, stupid". And that is NOT my theory, nor an insult, but a strategy that tends to work well in life!)

My Favorite too :)

I'm all in favour of KISS. Make of that what you will :)
Both my radiator fans are switched from a sensor in the radiator hose. Even more KISSed than the dual trigger layout. Where is the sensor for that system Martin? Are there two sensors?
