Has anyone tried fitting cooling fans in front of the rad?
Why would I want to? To enable me to carry a spare wheel with a forest tyre.
May manage with a pair of new ultra slim electric fans however fitting them in front of the rad would free up more space.

Should be alright if you really must. Not normally recommended though. Obviously it will block and distrupt flow into the rad.
Have you got a big Alloy one? ;) if not then it might not cope with all that horspower of yours anyway. :)
Chris Smith can get one made up to a drawing, if not.

Alloy! Rab are you daft, I'll have to learn the hard way. Did get a new rad made a while back cant remember if its 3 or 4 core but its nice and heavy to get some weight on the front. At the moment I would settle for pony power if only I could get it finished. Made a cardboard petrol tank today. If my calculations are correct will hold 53 litres. :D

Not sure about the physics, but will the obstruction of the fans have more effect in the high pressure before the radiator or in the low pressureturbulence behind? Gut instinct says worse in front. Who's got a wind tunnel again?
Steven - just use plenty of sticky backed plastic and the tank will be fine ;)

Susit, Are you planning on foam filling your cardboard fuel tank to improve safety? Think I may have some yellow upholstery foam spare if you need any. :p
Cheers

Failing that, you could always use half a dozen cans of 'squirty cream' That should expand into the corners OK.

The white rally car on the Napier stand at Stoneleigh had a spare mounted horizontally and quite a long way back in the front compartment (or is that where they go on a Corse?). I can't remember if it had a forest type tyre on the spare or not?
Was it the following car (Tony Aylot)?, or another white one?:

I gather it was Andrew Dearing's car?

Thats right Chris, it was Andrew Dearings car. He explained that he re-fabricated the bulkhead to allow storage of a spare wheel (which did have a forest/gravel tyre on it) But you would have noticed that this mod didn't allow the use of direct mounted master cylinders as used on the Tilton type pedal box. Still an interesting mod though. I seem to remember that the maximum width of tyre he could stow was a 225 but I may be wrong on that one.
You may have also noted that his car is regretably for sale. :(
Mick.
By the way, sorry I didn't have time to say hello, as you know, Sunday was a bit manic.

Andrew has been trying to sell it for years,
On the subject of fuel tank foam can anyone suggest a supplier of the stuff other than demon theives?
One of the advantages of using a floor mounted tilton pedal set up is it leaves the bulkhead clutter free and more space for spare wheel.
Still no clear answer on my original question re the position of the rad fans?

I got mine from one of the fuel tank suppliers, might have put their name in an old SEC newsletter, but can't remember who right now - may have been ATL.
If you have an MSA 'Blue Book' you should be able to find UK suppliers in there.

I don't think it will make a huge difference, and would only worry about it if the rad size is viewed as marginal to begin with. Could try asking Merlin what they think, or Pacet / Kenlowe et al for their opinion.
Note there isn't a huge amount of space in front of the radiator to fit the fans.

Steve
Give Chris Smith a call, he got both my tanks foam filled and outlets/breathers modified for less than I could find the foam itself for.
The place he gets his alloy bits made at is very resonable for all work. (and you know as an honarary Scot how tight I have to be :) !!) He could do the whole job for you. If not he may be to just get you some foam? Worth a quote, all you need to do is be able to fax Chris a drawing.
PM me if you haven't got Chris's number.
Cheers
