Well spotted Bernard.

'Just the job for donating the engine and box. No ID, which is good, and you can hear it running too?:

A very respectable looking low mileage GT4 (see below) just gone for less than £10,000, so you can see how worthless the Mondial 8 is going to be?:

Wonder what the reserve price is set at?

J.R.

PS - I reckon that engine would be better for an Ultima than a Strat

There are a lot of benefits with a 308 transmission though?;
Ability to change drop gears for the final drive and the limited slip diff. as standard. Ferrari gate gearstick just needs the link rod shortening. You'd want to bin the standard injection though, especially on a two valve?

You can't change drop gears unless you use a Michelotto Gr.4 setup (different to the 246 Gr.4) that includes drop gear cover, Gr.4 gearbox internals and appropriate drop gears.
This will easily cost the price of a pristine 308 fiberglass...

Forget that one then!

Yes you can change the drop gears - I had some straight cut gears made for my car to raise the gearing. The number of possible teeth combinations is limited by the gear spacing and the need for adequate tooth size. I think the Michelotto setup is double depth to give more room for manoeuvre in the number of combinations. Incidentally, Jack Knight also produced straight cut dog boxes for the 308.

I remember the yellow 308 rally car of Tony Worswick having a changable drop gear facility. I'm guessing (now) that he would have engineered any special parts himself to be able to do that?

Possibly. The JK parts were made back in the eighties when Ferrari Owners Club races were dominated by 308s and the Italian made parts were stupidly expensive (still the case !).

If you don't use a double gear in the middle then the available options are limited, at best, to +-7% of the original ratio. Why? Because the teeth/gear ratios are limited by the dimensions of the cover/casing and the limited space. 7% is a lot of fuss for nothing.
Like in the Stratos the Gr.4 308 uses a double middle gear to offer unlimited combinations and more than 45% variations of ratios. However the 308 Gr.4 shafts are much heftier than the 246 ones and the cascade gears are differently set up.

May be dumb question, but do dino powertrains (or however you want to describe the V6 in real stratos) ever come up and what are they worth?

It's the high value and collectability (is that a word?) of the 246 Ferrari Dino that's the problem. Nobody breaks a Ferrari Dino for spares, they nearly all get restored/rebuilt.

If you ever happen to find a Ferrari Dino engine and gearbox unit for sale you'd probably have to pay the best part of £10,000 these days or maybe more. Remember even the engine unit fitted to a Ferrari Dino still isn't 100% authentic compared to a Stradale Lancia Stratos engine and box.

Getting hold of a Fiat Dino 2400 engine (which is the same) is much easier and cheaper, but then you're stuck for the correct transmission. That's why we were discussing the remote possibility of matching a Fiat Dino V6 engine to a 308/Mondial type transmission. It seems that there are now quite a few unwanted Mondials around these days.

Much much cheaper to fit a 308 engine and box, and you do get the extra power and cylinders?

It all makes Alfas look like peanuts. In comparison that is. Nothing's ever really peanuts is it?

The blue Mondial wreck went for £2,181 the second time.

Mondials seem to be on the slide? I've never been keen on the shape, but they are good value for money in every other way? The 3.2 especially, here's one that's just sold on ebay:

Doesn't seem like much for all the running gear of a 328?
