Has anyone got a photo or technical illustration of an Alfa 164 rear stub axle, and how it's fixed to the rear suspension? Or is it part of an H beam? Or bolted on?

I'm asking because it might be a 'cunning plan' for a 5 stud front hub, or a blind alley.

Hi Chris,

Two bolts through the upright, very much like a front strut, plus an extra boss to take the longitudinal arm (which you could probably cut off if it was in the way).

Mmmmmm!!??

There's no rush, but I'm wondering if you could machine one to fit a front upright, I'd have to see what one looked like.

I don't know if there would be more work making the stub axle or making a new hub?
And, if it was a safe exercise?

Ah, sorry, I mis-read that.....the stub axle is an integral part of the upright....would the rear Alfa hub fit the Fiat upright is probably more useful!.

I'll have one in bits very soon and can take some pictures if you like.

I don't actually need any myself, but I have a spare Fiat Dino front stub lying around. 'Wouldn't really be a great loss if it got trashed in the process of an engineering experiment.

I'm thinking out loud here, by the way. Don't pay too much attention!

Yes, that would be good. I can probably make my mind up from some pictures. Like I said though, there's no rush.

I'm sure this might have crossed someones mind before, and been rejected?

You know how (on Caterhams for example) the stub axle bolts into the upright? Probably on a long taper. That sort of thing?

Chris

Just to make this clear. The front end on one car and rear end on another car can get a bit confusing some times?

I'm talking about the rear end of the 164, the non driven end. With a view to making the 164 rear stub axle into a bolt in stub axle. Similar to the ones illustrated in Demon Tweeks catalogue page 393 item 15. There would have to be enough 'meat' on the Fiat 132 upright to make it work, and I'm not sure there is?

It would save making (or buying) a special 5 stud hub. Making something out of an Alfa 75 front stub axle (and a Fiat 132 upright) might be another option?

Understood Chris (I hope). It might be simpler to consider fitting some taper bearings into the Alfa hub and making that fit a standard 132 upright maybe.

...but I'll take some shots for you anyway.

The alfa hub is a fair bit shorter front to back than the 132 item. New hub would be the cheapest route. I've thought of this one myself. The 132 upright casting doesn't have much meat about it to start and machine out for a different stub. Give me a week or so and i'll get quotes for steel and ally hubs.

Damn!

That's my bright idea dashed already. I've never seen a 164 hub to know how they are.

I'm sure Gerry reached this decision (to make a new component) about 5 or 6 years ago.

I'll emither you a pic after tea, stub axle with 132 hub and alfa one next to it.

I'll post the photo here John.

I see what you mean. It is quite small in comparison.

I have'nt given up on the idea totally yet.

I thought Gerry already had ally front hubs made up for the five-stud conversion?

Integrale 5 stud flanges less than £60.00 inc vat for a pair. I need one off front hubs for my abs install. should be fixed up for less than £200.00 all up
