Dunno whats happened then because I'm now seeing him posted as 16th overall after stage 6 Croft. Wonder if he's had an 'off' trying too hard. We need to keep watching and hoping for the best.

Looking through the stage times, it looks like Steve Perez lost 28 seconds on stage 6 'Croft 2'
He'd been posting top 6 times but only came in 20th fastest there.

'Just got back from Croft.
Thanks to David (Allora) Jowsey for the lift, 'else I wouldn't have gone.
I'm glad I did though. The weather was fantastic (for November).
Steve Perez had three car lengths on Stig (who was on his second lap) but by 'Tower'? bend Stig got right alongside the Stratos which seemed to cause Steve Perez to spin off. He did a full 360 without the two cars actually touching. It seemed to be the pressure from Stig that put him off. He must be going through a steep learning curve with the Stratos. The best thing is that the car looked and sounded great so I'll forgive him anything. (See attached)

I'm just looking at another photo I've got of the front tyre. It looks like 185/70/15 'Dunlop Formula R' The rears are a bit wider, but not much.
The rims look like 6" at the front and 7" at the rear?

I think the regs say no tyres with less than 70 profile, you would think this would hinder the strat more than the escort on tarmac as in there day did they not use 50 or even 40 profile? on the rear to keep the rear weight bias in check, does it seems odd to have the wiper arm parked on the drivers side?

I think I know why the arch was missing, I saw them through Bramham Park twice and on his second run he got the back out too wide on a 90 left in front of the house and clipped a straw bale. It was about 5ft across and drew a big cheer from the crowd!. I got it on video and also as he went out of sight he may have had a spin as there was another roar from the crowd. What with a TR7 V8 sliding across the grass an knocking over bales and needing a push to reach the tarmac it was just like the old days!. I went in my car to watch as it was 28 years to the month since I stood next to Munari on the start line at Bramham and became hooked on the car. I drove to the gates and not only was I not charged entry but the made me park the car right in front of Bramham House at the side of the stage!. All in all a top day out.
The car was mobbed by the way, I should have advertised my business on it!.

Sure did!, I was taken by my Dad in 1977 and stumbled across the start line caravan. I can remember standing there with a full house Alitalia Strato's in all its glory parked up, engine running. I would be a hell of a lot better off but for that cold, dark night all those years ago!. I think the experience was even more memorable as a few minutes later walking down the stage he nearly ran us over!. It was so dark you couldn't see your hand in front of your face and when we heard it coming my Dad turned himself and my brother and me left to get out of the way. Only it was a near vertical bank on the left covered in brambles, we grabbed at anything we could hold as the Stratos screamed by inches from our legs!.
Oh happy days.
Now if only Waldegard could be persuaded to have a bash it a Stratos next year to take on Stig etc, now that would be something!.

Well upon closer inspection that is not true (the uprights). The dashboard seems a do-it-yourself job, overall not the best Gr.4 conversion ever to hit the streets.

Any chance you will make it to Abingdon with the car one year? :)

I'd love to but there are parameters I have no influence on that must be taken into account....
On top I would really feel uncomfortable racing her while her value is what it is now.
I mostly plan small club outings in adequate tracks (short, twisty) with other historics like Alpine Renaults and Dinos in nearby France.
I also have other plans, complete Gr.4 original dash and electrical layout, Lockheed brakes F/R. These are very expensive and, not being a tycoon, I need to hold back on many other things. Cars are my passion and hobby and I always want everything to be exactly as I want it to. In the Stratos' case this approach is a financial nightmare and I'm trying to cope...
There's no interest in the fact the car is worth whatever amount if you're not a seller...and I'm certainly not. However if something bad happens I would never forgive myself. Another raison d'être of the Stratos is that it's part of my 2 sons heritage...I therefore feel twice as responsible for her in addition to her being a significant part of the automotive history.
Jay Leno said once: "I believe we don't really own these cars, we just keep them for the next owners."

Tryphon, In lots of ways I really feel sorry for you (until I remember you get have the howl of that Dino V6 to listen too) as to compete in my replica is what keeps me going I am far from being well off/rich and have spent more then my fair share of disposable income on building my car for rallying so can understand where you are coming from.
you dont mention Abingdon, you should give it a go, very smooth little chance of damage and its really not that far to trailer your car.
tryphon
November 23rd, 2005, 10:14 AM
No need to feel sorry. Happiness, car-wise and in my eyes, is exactly what I feel. I dreamt of the Stratos since I was a kid. I have one now. Then it's a bit like Ulysses when the journey is over... only I decided to keep going, respecting every aspect of the history and car, and reach another shore. Happiness is in the longing now...
In any case you don't thrush around a 30 year old car even if it's "brand new" i.e. restored. Many things can go wrong and many do, things you never had thought about. My last attempt ended when my alternator pulley, modified with original Gr.4 parts and fixed to a camshaft, undone its camshaft thread and spread oil all over the engine luckily on my cool-down lap. It could have caught fire. I fixed it myself and called it the day.
As for Abingdon, well the trailer, the journey, the lodging, the risk,..., you guessed it. Anyone is invited to see my car and have a go here, maybe even see the Stratos sides that almost nobody knows or will ever show you, but long trailer journeys are, for the moment out of the question.

Albeit in a different colour, unless there are 2 cars around with the same number plate?
