View Full Version : Veglia guage senders??

The original build of my car used Stewart Warner instruments, but I'd like to replace those for Veglia guages.
What senders do I need for the Fiat Veglia Oil Temp., Oil Pressure and Water Temp.?
I'm sure I've got a sender for the fuel, but will it need to be the right type?
I notice that the Monte Hospital sell various new senders. Has anyone bought any of these? I can't think where else to source them. If I need to, that is.

Hi Chris I used Lancia Beta scrap yard oil pressure & oil temp, seemed to work alright, I think X19 might work as well, drilled & tapped the remote filter houseing fine thread I seem to remember borrowed some taps . Regards Mark.

Hi Chris
I Used the new Beta senders from the Monte Hospital and they worked fine on the Vx. I've even transfered a couple over to the new 24v as I then know they'll work. (Oil temp, Oil Press and Water temp to Guage) The older senders mostly have one tag and use the thread into the block to pick up and send back a resistance to earth. Modern senders that work with an ECU often have two tags as they get a voltage from the ECU and sense the return voltage on the other wire.
Most of the old type temp senders are pretty similar I'm told so I suppose it's just getting the right thread or an adapter to fit. I'm not sure what resistance range you need to be in, but the Beta ones are fine with the veglia guages. (and Smiths Oil temp guage that I use)
cheers

Thanks Mark and Rob
'Might have a few more questions when I really get stuck into the dashboard build.

It seems that (after reading this on the Viva Lancia site) that you can't use any old Fiat oil pressure sender with any old Veglia guage:
The confusing part is the sender. So far I have come across types with ranges of 0 - 6 bar, 0 - 7 bar and 0 - 8 bar. These ranges are stamped into the bottom or into the side of the sender. I am talking about Veglia senders now. They are all about 300 Ohms, 10% at zero pressure and 0 Ohms at their full scale value. Because the pressure relief valve opens at appr. 6 bar (I have measured 6,2 bars on several cars) the actual oil pressure will never go over 6,2 bar. The 7 bar and 8 bar senders will never get to a value of 0 Ohms. The needle will never reach full scale.
If I'm using a guage from a Fiat Dino, should I be sourcing a Dino pressure sender?
They're currently over £38+vat!

The A-R 24V V6 uses the Veglia 111.03.08-KCM2 A2 sensor (8bar) that goes from 300 Ohm at 0bar to 62 Ohm (measured) at 8 bar.

David,
It's a Honda V6.

Doesn't stop you using the sender if it "talks" the right lingo to the guage, but you might need a thread adapter.

Hi Rob
I have established that my oil temp sender reads way too high on both my Veglia and Smiths gauges on my 12v V6. Do you think the hospital's replacement will be much better ? I recall you saying that you too were getting high readings at one time with the 24v.
Does anyone else know of suppliers ? My local Fiat dealer could only offer one for a 2.5 diesel at £58 + VAT.
Cheers, Alan.

Hi Al
I don't think it is too much of a mis match with the Monte/Beta sender (Mine is a Smiths Oil Temp), the problem is the guage scale just has a mark between 90 and 130 and I had no idea what it was! at least with the stick on temp tell tales I know it's not too bad and so I now know what 95 or 100 looks like on the guage.
My thoughts were that so long as you know what the temp really is (helps  ) for normal running and where that is on the guage (assuming it's not off the guage ;) ) then I was happy to run with it, even though it was vague. If it gets up to anywhere near the 130 I'd see the Oil pressure guage going the other way and start to worry!
Check the thread you need though? You may need an adapter?
I can't remember which was which now but I had to juggle them around and moved the oil pressure sender to the front head like a 12v to get them all on ok.
CAI / Caerbont /Green guages are the guys that make the Smiths guages now. You could try them for a matching sender for that one?

[QUOTE=Sando]Hi Al
etc
Thanks Rob, that was fast.
My in car gauge is off scale at 120C and was running at a "pootle" in cool (14C ambient) conditions at 115C.
On test the gauge actually read 95C at a real 63C so there is some comfort in that but something closer to reality would be nice.
I'll see what these chaps can provide me with.
I already have a set of adaptors for temp & warning light so they might do already.
