Somebody mentioned that there was a 'plate' available to strengthen the alfa boxes? Does anyone know any details and who sells them?

I believe the item is a Lancia Delta Evo part.
Best to contact Walkers for stuff like that.

You can also get them and have them fitted by John Day at TNI Motorsport - 01474 855666.
I know he has fitted several. It involves some machining to remove some of the casting to the thickness of the steel plate that is fitted.

Where does it go? Which bit does it strengthen?

It goes on the front end of the gearbox, between the gearbox and the bellhousing.
It reinforces the perimeter of the gearbox casing and the area around the bearings. It is designed to prevent movement in these areas which can cause cracking of the case and premature bearing failure as a result of misalignment caused by case flexing.
