Hi all.
I will be needing a gearbox to fit on my new 12v engine, but I am not sure if i should get a 12v or 24v box.
I understand that the ratios are different and that the 24v box is supposed to be a little stronger, but I dont know if the 24v box fits onto a 12v engine without modifications?
Are there any other gearboxes that are a better bet to use such as 155, 156, 166 etc?
I believe that my existing powerplant is a stock 12v engine and box and i dont want to choose the wrong box that turns out to give worse performance than i have right now.
Does anyone have a good Alfa V6 box for sale (without cracks :p ).
Cheers
Tim

Hi Tim, after my exploits to find a replacement gearbox a couple of months ago I can pass on a few bits of info that I had passed on from various sources. Apparently a 24v box will fit a 12v motor and has a couple of advantages in that the ratios are a bit closer and the 1st motion shaft main bearing is bigger. I cant verify any of this as I ended up putting a very good rebuilt 12v' box in mine (thanks Roger)!. I think the bigger bearing will fit the 12v though as my new gearbox's bearing is much beefier than the unit I took out. This was leaking oil and once out it was apparent this was due to the bearing having all but disappeared. There is an Alfa specialist in the London area (other site members know him as Gatwick Alfa, but unfortunately I've misplaced his no) who I spoke to who will build a 'box to your spec for about £450 I think. He did seem knowledgable and genuine, if somebody could pass on his phone no.
Best of luck
Bob.

I was told that the were a form of viscous diff, and that they won't cope too well with sustained loads. Is that so, or just someone being over-cautious (or even hoping to sell a better, but more expensive, solution?
How much for these lsd's then?

Hi all...
I am in the market for an LSD for my Thema Turbo 16V gearbox and I was also told that the standard ViscoDrive LSD is not man enough for the job... Anybody know any better???

must have worked on 20 dedra turbos overthe years never known one of these diffs to go down even when snapped engine mount expect to pay 100-250 for full box straight swap in 12v(full gearbox) but for 24v take both diffs out and swap crown wheel putting 24vwheel into dedra diff an bolt into 24v box off side drive shaft and n/s will now have lancia smaller flanges again simply use spacers (as 24v conversions) and use longer 8mm bolts ps i promise to do my level best to see how week these diffs are heres to plenty of sideways fun its not quite that simple in a corse because of drive shafts but man loves a challenge oh watch this space cheap as chips sequecial manuel gearbox bet thats a first
