Has anybody converted the alfa clutch to cable operation, or is it easier to convert the front end to hydraulic?

I think that Jerry Bailey's car uses cable operation for the clutch on his 24-valve engine, which was an upgrade from a two-litre.
No idea how that compares to hydraulic operation, but cable 'stiction' can be a problem if the runs aren't straight enough (although I think they are probably ok on these kits). Leverage isn't likely to be a problem either, but I don't know either way.
I'm assuming your chassis doesn't have a bracket already mounted to the cross-rail above the pedals, which accepts the Fiat X1/9 master cylinder.
If not, you could get the bracket from Gerry and weld it in place. You would then also need a different pedal, for the actuating arm, plus an additional grp panel that goes onto the bulkhead area to provide additional clearance and access to the top end of the clutch pedal. I think this all comes as a hydraulic clutch conversion kit from Hawk Cars, if you want to go that route.

Dont go there!!!
Originally I had a cable set up on a 2 litre lump, which did a good imitation as a "Bulworker" in disguse, It wrecked the back of one set of seats, changing to hydraulic was the best thing I did, apart from changing to a V6.
PS. Gerrys way is not the only way to go when installing a master cylinder, mine is installed verticaly on to a plate welded to the central diagonal type brace, with the lever operating in a dowmwards arc. Hard to describe but if youre interested I can post a Piccie, it is a lot easier than trying to convert to a horizontal M/C in an impossible to get to location, it is also easier for access and an easier hydraulic run and does not involve cutting holes in the bulkhead.

I've not got details, but you might find what you need by searching for 'Fieldfare Trailers', which is a business run by Jerry Bailey (based south-west somewhere, Somerset or Dorset I think).

Jerry Bailey didn't do the actual conversion himself. The work was done mainly by Tony Favarin, who is sort of part of Henessy Racing, so it might be better to go through Lionel Gooch.
